Braces on teeth for four years already?

Hi. My son has had braces on his teeth for four years and it looks like this could take another two years or so before treatment is completed. Is this an abnormally long time - is he a unique case? Will his teeth have defects on them from the brackets being on so long? He is now 13. Thx.

Typical treatment time is from six months to six years, depending on the severity of the case, location, age, etc., although two years is average.


Retainers are required to be worn once treatment with braces is complete. The orthodontist will recommend a retainer based on the patient's needs. If a patient does not wear the retainer as recommended, the teeth might move towards their original position (relapse).
Reply:yes considering i had teeth on top, underneath, behind, around teeth, and i only need a 2 years.
Reply:I had my braces for about 3-4 years! My teeth were horrible!!! The brackets should not affect them at all..When I had mine it was almost 20 yrs ago and I had no damage on my teeth! Being a more modern time I can't see any damage..Esp since I didn't have any that long ago!
Reply:umm well i jus got my braces off today and i have had them on 4 2 years now, and i can see where my brackets were on a few of my teeth !! soo he might want to brush really really good !! especally on the bottem !!! hope that helps !!
Reply:i am now 34 yrs iv had mine on for 5 yrs its norm.Im sooo glad i did !
Reply:My daughter's braces were on for 3 years and that was a long time. If that's what the orthodontist is saying, I guess it is correct. He must have had other dental appliances to correct other problems. He will be very handsome when the braces come off!
Reply:I had them for four years. (all thru high school) Just make sure he brushes regularly and thoroughly and he should be fine! Ask your Orthodontist if he had any impacted teeth (i did, thats one of the reasons i had them for so long) Invest in one of those tools that have a pointed brush so he can clean thoroughly between his brackets.
Reply:i had mines for 5 yrs...they only said i needed 2 when i first got them....i think its normal
