My dentist says that if an adult uses braces, it's a waste of time because the teeth move back to their original position onces the braces are removed. Is this true?
Braces for teeth?
No not at all. Adults can get braces just like children and teens do. And a retainer (if worn properly) prevents the teeth moving back to their original position in children, teens, and adults alike. The number of adult patients in orthodontics (braces) is rising more and more each year. The one thing that is true is that it is harder, more painful, and takes longer for an adult to get braces verses a child or teen. The reason why is because in a child/teenager the jaw and bones in the mouth are still growing (less for a teen than a child but still growing ) making it easier to move the teeth and shape the jaw in the correct position. It can still be done in adults but it is harder and hurts more because the teeth and jaw are no longer growing and in the position that they planned on staying for the rest of your life. Braces are great for any age (well not ANY age, like not REALLY old people like 80 and 90) but it is harder and takes longer as you get older. But adults can get braces just like children and teens do.
Reply:Absolutely not. my niece used that at 12 and she has beautiful teeth now. Previously it was horrible.
Reply:I don't think so .. I'm have braces right now .. and I'm feeling the change already
Reply:I hope it isn't because I've just started going to a dentist regularly and he said i need them... but i'm refusing til after i graduate (i'm a senior....) so i'll have em as a college student..... gosh i hope that isnt true.
Reply:no, because after u get them off, they give u a retainer that u wear for a year or two, so ur teeth remain strait. i only have to wear my retainer at night, so it doesn't even effect what i am doing.
Reply:No, that is not true. If you wear your retainer, all your teeth will stay put.
Reply:Rubbish. I hated my teeth and had braces about 3 years ago. I have had mine off about a year now, i wear my retainer for a couple of nights every 3-4 months and they have stayed straight. Ok so i need a retainer but thats a small price to pay for nice teeth, Yes he's right that they try to move back but not drastically and you can maintain it like i say with a retainer. I would never refer to my braces as a waste of time, its the best thing i ever done.
