Like if you got teeth problems(physical ones) like overlapping of teeth, how do braces work in correcting them to their normal state?

Braces slowly move the teeth into the correction position so that any eating or speech problems may also be corrected. Much like the same way an erupting tooth with not much space to grow may shift other teeth in it's way, therefore making the other surrounsding teeth crooked.

Reply:okay well when they put your braces on they glue the brackets to the front of your teeth and place a wire through the slots in the braces. then they tighten this wire which puts gentle pressure on your teeth. this process pulls your teeth in the correct positions and holds them there. Then after braces are off you'll get a retainer(s) this holds your teeth in place so that they don't shift back again.

my dentist recommended deep clean because i never had regular clean.

my orthodontics recommended braces to correct my deepbite

also he looked at my xray he told me to have 3 wisdom teeth removed before installing braces.

my question is when should i have my teeth cleaned(deep clean) 1.before wisdom teeth removal

2. after wisdom teeth removal.3 or after i had my braces

yes you should have the cleaning first, why you ask, your mouth will become healthy after that, so when you have the teeth pulled your mouth will heal faster,

have the deep cleaning before anything. your mouth will hate it at first but a week goes by and its all good
Reply:I would take his recommendation, but you would need to heal at least a month after the deep cleaning before removing the wisdom teeth unless they are hurting you now or significantly impacting your bite.

You should have your teeth cleaned before braces as they could take 1-2 years or far longer followed by a retainer. If you are facing periodontal disease, this deep cleaning can't wait.

Is this bad for my teeth or my braces?

i have braces on my top teeth only , had them for a little over a month,

i sometimes tend to accidently, hit my top teeth with my bottom, hit the top and bottom teeth together. it happens at least 3-5 a day every day.

will this have any bad or side effects, or mess up my fixing of the teeth

Is this bad for my teeth or my braces?
you should try not to do that because it isn't good for your teeth, but they may need to fix your bite. why do you only have the braces on the top? they usually need both arches to have the braces to fix your bite as well.
Reply:no technically it wont...it shouldnt have any afect on that ...but i would still advise your orthodontist that this happens just in case:)

all my friends who have their braces off have stained, yellow patches on their teeth. it's really gross. does this happen to all braces wearers? how can i keep my teeth healthy and clean during my ortho treatment?

Brush after every meal, floss daily (yes, under every wire %26amp; bracket) and use a fluoride rinse, such as ACT. There is a new paste out that prevents and aids in healing decalcification (the discoloration you referred to) from ortho - it is called MI Paste and you put in on topically before bed - no rinsing afterward - it now comes with fluoride in it too!! I've seen the results myself - as a hygienist, I often recommend it! A waterpik would help too!!
Reply:wash yout teeth after every meal and try to buy a colgate whitening gel or any good whitening system until your treatment ends, that should work good
Reply:get a waterpik and some proxy brushes, they sell both at target, they help immensly and make sure you brush your teeth 2-3 times a day no matter what and your breath smells bad more often because it gets caught in the braces so always have some breath mints on you just in case

Reply:i have braces and no that does not happen to all breaces wearers. it only happens if u neglect to keep them clean. what i do is first i use this brush that can go between the wires and scrub the brackets. my ortho calls it a Christmas tree brush cuz the actual brush looks like a treeshape. i clean through all the brackets and the wires. then i take my regular toothbrush and brush through once or twice. i do that routine twice a day. also if u have a lot of food stuck in ur braces it's a good idea to brush right away and clean them out. its not as hard to keep them clean and fresh as u might imagine. good luck!!!!!
Reply:Colgate Phos-Flur rinse each night after brushing. Brush your teeth often. Keep the little brush with you at all times. I have one in my purse and one in my bathroom to use when I cannot brush. Try to get the food off the teeth and out of the braces as soon as you can. Rinsing with water helps a bunch too.
Reply:I have braces too. Not everyone has the yellow stains, if you don't brush your teeth and floss your gums then they will appear. The stains will last a life time, they will never come off.You should brush your teeth atleast 2 times everyday. Preferably after each meal. Then to prevent your gums from bleeding, floss your teeth. You won't get the yellow stains as long as you do what your dentist/orthodontist says and everything will come out right.

Reply:The Sonicare brush is especially recommended for someone with braces. There are many different model designations, but the "motors" are all pretty much the same. The kits are different because they pack different accessories. Some have two brush heads and some have four. Some have a travel bag and some have a wall-mount charger instead of a counter top charger. Just read the label carefully and buy what you need. Bear in mind that you will have to replace the brush heads about every six months, so see if it is cheaper to buy a few extra brush heads in one of the kits.

Otherwise, buy a Sonicare, read and follow the directions. The directions are very clear and easy to understand.

If you want to try a Sonicare without taking out a loan, I've got good news for you. I just bought one for THIRTY DOLLARS. It uses two "AA" batteries, so you are not paying for a charger, etc. I have no idea how long the batteries last (yet), but $70 would buy a boat load of batteries. It seems to be equally effective as the rechargeable version when you are using new batteries.

They are most likely loose because the braces are moving them at such a rate the teeth are very movable and sensitive. Eventually they should be sturdy and stay in the position until all your teeth are straight. There's nothing to worry about.....unless you lose a tooth.......then go see your dentist.

Should I have my 12 year old's teeth bonded before braces?

My 12 year old son is getting braces next week but they want us to get it teeth bonded in front to fill in all the spaces he has between his teeth. I'm a bit concerned about this because right now his teeth arn't as white as they should be. He knows he will have to brush regularly with the braces on so what if this causes his natural teeth to be come whiter, will the bonding they do still blend in or will it stand out like a sore thumb? Also, I thought the point of getting the braces was to fill in the spaces between the teeth so why is the bonding even necessary? I'm really confused and the answer I was given by the denist just doesn't make sense to me. Thanks in advance!

I assume your son can still chew food just fine. Bonding is a cosmetic fix for small spaces that is used after braces or in lieu of braces. It doesn't make sense to get both. The braces should pull the teeth to fill in the spaces and it will take time to do that. The dentist is probably trying to show immediate results. I would recommend finding an orthodontist or a different dentist.

Regarding bonding, a dentist should match the color of the bonding to the teeth so they should blend perfectly and you shouldn't be able to tell the bonding is there even if you are inches away from their face. If the dentist can't match, they are not a good eye for cosmetics.

Teeth stain naturally and would only get whiter if your son is using whitening toothpaste or other tooth whiteners. If anything the teeth will get darker and at that point the bonding will need to be replaced.
Reply:NO! I have bonded teeth because of chips, and when I got braces, the glue used to stick the brackets to the tooth would not adhere well to the bonded teeth. After a week or so, the brackets would just pop off. Eventually I had to get the type of brackets that they use for molars, and because of that, everyone always told me that I has tin foil stuck in my braces.

After I got my braces removed years ago, I gradually stopped using my retainers and now I can see that my teeth shifted --- not a whole lot but enough that I can notice it(bummer). As a result, obviously, my old retainers don't fit anymore. Is there anything I can do about this ( I mean I know it's pretty much my fault lol)?

I had my braces taken off about 5 years ago and I've been wearing retainers on my top teeth every night since then. I'm going to the dentist in the first week of May to see if there is a more permanent option because wearing retainers for life is not an option that I want to deal with. I think that the shifting is inevitable.
Reply:I also have the same problem. My dentist said I would have to get braces again. But depending on how severe ur teeth have moved, ur dentist may do the mold again and give u new retainers. But mines recommend braces again since I can't fit into my old ones and my teeth are almost back to the way they were. But see ur ortho, they may have some solutions. Good luck!
Reply:Yes. When I got my braces off I could tell a difference when I took my retainers out in the morning and when I put them in at night. I got my wisdom teeth removed a couple years ago %26amp; over 3-4 weeks (while my mouth was SUPER swollen %26amp; sore) I could not put my retainers in. My teeth moved so fast! So, I just got braces back on to fix what hapened after I had my wisdom teeth removed...

My options were to either get new reatiners to hold what I had, get braces back on to fix them or do nothing. I chose to fix them.
Reply:it is a must that you wear your retainer after getting your braces removed, anything less is like giving away money. OMG, i feel soo bad for you because you have to do something now, not later, you may need to go and see your general dentist just to see if he/she has any idea's other than going back into ortho. There is Invisalign and they are great, they're a series of clear aligners that you change every two weeks and the results are so nice. They're clear so you can wear them and people not really notice them, you don't have to worry about the possiblilty of decay (as with brackets). Or maybe they can fit you for another retainer that you must wear, especially at night, when the body is at rest, that's when the teeth move. Good luck, peace 2 u.

I'm getting braces tomorrow and my wisdom teeth removed on Wednesday, but I haven't told my oral surgeon that I will be coming in for wisdom teeth surgery with braces on. I'm going to tell him tomorrow morning, but I just wanted to know if he will be able to remove them at all. Thanks!

Reply:yes they can remove them because your wisdom teeth are not even in your mouth yet they are burried under your gums....but fair warning i would NOOOOTTT get braces and then get your wisdom teeth out...the pain of braces is really hard and the whole wisdom tooth thing is a real pain in the behind...you seem young sense your just getting braces so to tell you the truth for your best interest i would postpone the wisdom tooth surgery until your braces are removed

Reply:yeah, i was actually told by my ortho that i needed to get my wisdom teeth removed before end of treatment but now was not necessary. so i will have braces on when I get them removed. they do not put bands on ur very last molar it is the 2nd to last so u will have another teeth back ther to stop the oral surgeon from touching braces. i dont think it will be a problem. but i agree with others that u may want to wait on either braces or wisdom teeth not the type of pain u want all at once. won't be able to eat a thing for abotu 2 wks if u do that.

Reply:I had my wisdom teeth surgically extracted and I had braces also. It was a different kind of pain, like apples and oranges. My wisdom teeth really didn't hurt, what hurt the most about that was how far they wrenched my jaw open to get back there while I was under anesthesia. Braces was more pain due to the pressure of your teeth moving. I would say that braces were more tolerable over all (but you have to endure the pain every month or every visit to the orthodontist)

Front teeth extraction for braces?
I had my two bicuspids on the top extracted at the same time. it was totally painless and there was no swelling at all. sometimes for sweeling it depends on how your body reacts to the novacane, good luck! tell me how things go!
Reply:I had four teeth extracted for braces. They took, I think, the bicuspids.

They did the extractions two at a time. The first appointment was for the upper and lower on the right side. The second appointment was two weeks or so later for the upper and lower on the left. They spaced out the appointments so my mouth had time to heal.

It didn't hurt too much. I didn't go to school that day, but was able to go the next after sleeping the entire day. The hard part was not being able to eat that day or the next.

Reply:I got all my four teeth out at one time-2 on top and 2 on the bottom. Your teeth won't shift overnight-it takes a while- besides you are getting braces so it won't matter because they will shift later anyways.

Thank goodness braces have improved with time

I am 41 %26amp; had the "rail-road track" kind -- that was the braces of the late 70s, early 80s

and I have a scar on the inside of my top lip over my front teeth as a result of my railroad tracks getting stuck on a boys railroad tracks %26amp; having to have them cut apart (talk about embarassing)

anyway.... if the braces are new to your mouth, your mouth will be a little tender, so take it easy

Like the other person said, the only concern othewise is to not press in to tightly so you don't cut your lip

My son (who is now 19) had braces from 14 - 17.. I never had to take him to ER for getting locked up with someone else who had braces... the profile for braces is much closer to the teeth these days :)
Reply:it feels pretty much the same, but you gotta be slower with you head pivots. or if you really get into it, be careful cuz there is a chance that you can get cut.

Reply:It's not a big deal, really. Modern braces are close to the tooth and light.

It's only really a problem if you really get in to kissing...I've cut the inside of my boyfriend's upper lip once or twice and very slightly scratched the enamel of one of his front teeth. That was during a rather passionate episode, though.

It's a little weird at first but is really not a problem unless you've just had an adjustment. In that case, it hurts.

It is also important to floss. There is a special kind of needle made of plastic that helps get the food out. I was very bad about flossing when I had braces and because of it ended up with a lot of cavities.

I would suggest talking to your orthodontist to see if using any of the whitening products out on the market (for a short time) is a safe option for you.

Reply:There's nothing you can do. Color your braces black, that will make your teeth look brighter.

My teeth were the same way when i had braces. if you try to whiten ur teeth, there will be white circles on all of ur teeth when you take them off. it will be very hard to get rid of them. my advice would be to just keep them as clean as you can and then when you get the braces off, try to whiten them.

Reply:I would recommend waiting to whiten your teeth until after you get your braces off. The whitening product will not be able to come into contact where the braces are, so you will have noticeable stains on your teeth after your braces come off.

I'm 15 and went to the orthdontist before. He told me to get two adult teeth taken out thenin 2 weeks he'll put spacers then braces etc. BUT my other teeth haven't all come through yet! So don't all your adult molar teeth have to come through first? %26amp; I don't want to get the teeth taken out because I've already got visible gaps from baby teeth falling out!!

Please tell me if you know this is normal and fine, or if there's anyway I DON'T have to get teeth taken out!! Thankyou!!

im pretty sure that the ortho will know what he is talking about. you dont need your adult molars. i currently have braces, and they dont put anything on your adult molars. the ring thing that the wire attaches to goes on the other molar. you normally want to have all your baby teeth gone before they put on braces, so that when it does fall out it does grow back in weird and move your teeth. im guess that if you have some spaces from baby teeth you recently lost, if they grow in enough, theyll stick a bracket on it. if you are really worried, stop by and ask him to explain it to you.

oh yeah, i forgot to add that if your teeth are really crooked, getting some taken out would be a good idea. it would allow for more space in your mouth, and in the long run better/healthier teeth!
Reply:If you don't want the teeth out, ask your orthodontist what will happen if you don't get them out. If he/she is still willing to treat you and you can accept the compromised outcome, just don't get them out.

However... It is NO BIG DEAL to get these teeth out. 99 times out of 100, the kid (usually 11-12 years old - NOT 15) can't believe they are out. Don't worry about the extractions.

And, you say that you are worried about the visible gaps, but the plan would be to close up those gaps.
Reply:I thought the idea of braces was to straighten and strengthen teeth already there .... having 2 removed would seem totally counter-productive. Though I'm no dentist it doesn't seem right ...unless the teeth he's going to remove are impeeding some that haven't come through yet ... I'd think I'd be going and getting a second opinion from another orthodontist

Extractions and Children: Be Careful!

What about children? Personally I do not advocate tooth extraction in children because they are still growing. Years ago, extraction for children was common, but this is not the case today. Some orthodontists still routinely extract children's teeth. If you encounter this, please seek several additional opinions before making your decision.

There are many other methods that can be used to meld children's jaws to make room (palate expansion, headgear, or guided growth methodology). Extracting teeth from children can result in less than optimal facial aesthetics. In other words, you child's face may not wind up looking as good as it could have, because it will grow longer and flatter instead of fuller.

One exception involves a Class III malocclusion. Class III cases are technically much more difficult and often involve jaw surgery. If you need more information about Class III malocclusion, read about it in our FAQ.
Reply:I'm not sure if they did the right thing, but I had two teeth extracted before they wired me with braces. Eventually, it looked okay. The thing is, they're the experts and if we don't trust them, we can drive ourselves crazy.

Reply:When I got my braces they took two of my upper teeth out. they said this would leave room for the teeth to move towards the rear. If you don't wear your headgear you will be waisting money and time. The faster you can get your braces off the better. Please wear your headgear.

You may feel self conscious wearing the braces, but I think I was lucky in love while I was wearing them. I think they gave me a sense of humility and a very shy smile. It was a killer combination for the ladies.

Reply:When I started my braces extravagaza in like 6th grade I had to have 6 teeth pulled before they could start orthodontic treatment... Ive had adult teeth taken out as well.

It may not make sense to take out perfectly fine teeth but usually its due to crowding or if your teeth are crooked in order to move them straight they need more space...

to your question of is it right... well... if you think its right to have straighter teeth than perhaps it is the best treatment method. Remember your ultimate goal is to have a beautiful smile with straight teeth, otherwise you wouldnt be visiting an orthodontist. If you think its not normal(although I think that they usually have a reason for the things they do and know what results it would produce) then go get a second opinion at another orthodontist.

Personally, although it sucked to get 6 teeth pulled in one day... the results and compliments I get on my straight teeth today and the boost of confidence I have as well was well worth the short time span of being uncomfortable... and im happy I dont have an overcrowded mouth anymore too. :-D
Reply:Is your jaw to small to accommodate all your teeth?that is what my problem was i had four adult teeth removed when i was a teenager and i have a beautiful and straight smile.if you dont trust that dentist get a 2nd opinion but he is dentist (a doctor of teeth)I had spacers and rubberbands youll feel dorky for awhile but the end result is worth it.
Reply:look, if you have crowded teeth, thats why they're takent hem out. in the end after they puy braces on, the braces are gonna close the gaps of those extracted teeth.

I had the same thing. Almost as soon as I got braces, I had more confidence. Just knowing I had braces on to fix it boost my self esteem. Keep up with the appts and use additional bands or headgear as your Ortho says. And in a short time, when you get them off, you'll see straighter teeth. Good luck!=)
Reply:If you go to all of your appointments on time and do exactly what your orthodontist tells you concerning your treatment, your teeth should turn out fine. You usually won't see results over night, braces can take years to do their job, but you will slowly start to see results as time goes on. So just go on and smile, don't hold back.

You are lucky enough to be able to have them, so look at this as a short term inconvienence to a long term issue that is now being fixed.

You will forget they are there by the end of it, just stay natural because you might be drawing more attention to them by being so self-conscious.

Reply:I had buck teeth and had to get braces too. Just know that it will get better! It will take time and patience but you will get there! You will have beautiful, straight teeth when you are done. Just remember to follow your ortho's general care instructions both while you have your braces on and after you get them off! Good luck!

Anyone else experienced weakened teeth after having braces?

I probably had 1 or maybe 2 fillings before i had my braces and i had them for 5 years (elastics, brackets, springs and all!) but shortly after having them taken off, everytime i have gone to the dentists i have needed a filling! i think i had 1 when i had them on but that was an old one that had fallen out over the course of the years and because my teeth had moved.

i know it's not because i filling could not be done when i had braces because i had that one done so thinking that its due to them being on so long and weakening the enamel as now they are exposed whereas before the fronts and backs were covered slightly.

i have spoken to my dentist about this and she just says that it is down to a change in diet but i eat the same foods now as i did then and always have done! i eat less sugary foods like chocolate and sweets, cake etc and dont really drink pop even tho iv always drank fruit juices which i know can be bad for your teeth but i always make sure my teeth are clean afta.

Anyone else experienced weakened teeth after having braces?
Due to all the pushing and pulling of teeth/extra food held against teeth by braces/lack of flossing causing even more food to be caught inbetween teeth/gum swelling causing increase of food held against teeth/brushing habits that do not clean as well due to the braces getting in the way/and usually an increase in sugary juices, sodas, and candies due to teenage years most people experience weakend teeth after and during braces. Getting a fluoride rinse or brush on gel can help "remineralize these teeth" and help prevent you from getting as many cavities. Also, Floss!! For extra help do not rinse after brushing, most people do this and rinse off all the fluoride vitamins in toothpaste so you do not get the benefits from the toothpaste. I had braces a few years ago and I always wear my retainer, but my front teeth still stuck out a bit more than the others. It might be partly because they're bigger, which braces can't really help. Also when I bite a few teeth on one side don't feel flush. At the time I assumed it was because they were worn crooked from before I had braces. Also I don't always know where to find my bite because my jaw clicks and moves around which I just found out is not normal. There's not much I could do about it now, though, since I've moved away from where I go tthem done before.

soooo, this may sound crazy, but you can just avoid the clicking at all costs and itll eventually go away, or talk to your dentist about it, ive told my ortho and dentist before. honestly, i can remmeber what they said but they didnt seem concerned or worried about it

Reply:You shouldn't. Braces are cemented to your teeth, so any whitening solution you use will not affect the part of your teeth the braces are attached to. You might end up with braces-sized stains on your teeth.

Reply:You could do tooth whitening if you found a tray style product that will go over the braces. The cement keeping the braces on actually keeps that area decay free and stain free. It is the rest of the area that will get stained by drinks, food, smoking and wine. Yes, the best is to brush, floss (if you got that fancy floss for braces) and swish.

You will still likely have some colour difference when they come off but your ortho will get the cement off. The yellow people are saying about is bc their friends probably have un maintained "clear braces"

Hmmmm... well it really depends on how bad your teeth are. I had buck teeth and they literally started going in about 2 months, but if you have really bad teeth then it will probably be about 4 months until you see real results, but then they will start moving really quickly. BTW, if you feel pissed off about your braces at any time, DO NOT GO ON FEELING ANNOYED! I was always irritated about them but now that I've got them off IT WAS SO WORTH IT!! So yeah, there's my advice! I hope it all goes well xx
Reply:It's so surprising how fast your teeth move. You'll most likely see a huge change within the first couple of months. Even after the first month, I saw a noticeable change.

Yes i have the same situation, or at least had. I had to get all myt 4 removed. BUT, the doc told me, that it should removed 1 at a time. with a few days gap, preferably week gap (as i had). removing them is a big thing as they are permanent teeth with deep roots. I couldnt even eat properly, with the removal of one, with my mouth swelling. I had to get stiches with the bottom 2, as they were impacted. So, I dont know why ur doc is saying to get them all out at once. That is a lot of injury to take at one time. Maybe get a second opinion.

ANd also, it is advisable to get either top braces or lower first. Not both at once. As the pain gets alot. So it should be done with time. I got my lower ones after 2 months since the top was put on.

Not trying to scare u, but just warn u that it might not be best to get all removed at one. IT takes time for the injury to heal

In a patient with a dry socket, blood does not fill up the extraction socket or the blood clot is lost. The gums can not grow over the extraction socket because there's nothing to grow over and the hole remains open. This opening causes a constant dull throbbing pain and the patient can often have a foul smelling breath and bad taste in the mouth. Ear pain is another possible dry socket symptom.

It's called a dry socket because the hole, or socket, that the tooth used to fit into becomes dry. It begins hurting about three days after oral surgery. Unfortunately, the pain lasts about a week after it begins. The dental name is acute alveolar osteitis. Acute means all of a sudden. Alveolar is the name of the bone that supports teeth. -itis means inflamed and osteo- means bone. Osteitis means bone inflammation. Acute alveolar osteitis means sudden inflammation of the bone that supports a tooth.

Dentists don't know exactly what causes a dry socket. It occurs more with lower teeth than upper teeth and more with females than males. The problem occurs more often after difficult extractions. It may be that forceful pushing against the wall of the socket when the tooth is being removed causes the walls of the tooth socket to become crushed. This prevents bleeding into the socket because the blood vessels have been crushed closed. The lack of blood then causes severe pain.

Anything that dislodges the clot can cause a dry socket. Forceful spitting or sucking though a straw can pull a clot completely out of its socket. Patients should wait a day before rinsing with warm salt water to avoid dissolving the new blood clot. When salt water rinsing, spit gently to avoid pressure. Carbonated beverages should be avoided because they may bubble the clot out. Alcoholic drinks can dry out the blood clot and prevent healing. Avoid smoking for a few days after dental extractions because smoking can disturb clot formation. Patients who have recently had oral surgery should avoid anything that may irritate the socket or anything that may cause the clot from being dislodged. Follow our oral surgery post operative instructions carefully to avoid dry socket treatment.

I am an Oral Surgeon and have practiced for 27 years. The removal of all 4 wisdom teeth at once is the routine procedure. If you have an Oral Surgeon do it, there shouldn't be any problem. We are trained for surgery and actually, removal of teeth and wisdom teeth is one of the easier things for us. Just remember to follow all of the post-operative instructions very closely so your recovery will be quick and comfortable.

It is INSANE to remove these teeth one at a time. If you do 1 or 2 or all 4, you will still have the same amout of pain afterwards, which will be easily taken care of with a prescription pain killer. You will still take the same amount of medication whether you do 1 tooth or 4. If you do 1 or 4 teeth, you will still be eating soft foods for a few days, still be keeping ice on for the swelling, etc, etc. So, whether you do 1 or 4 teeth, your post -op experience will essentially be the same. If you do all 4, then you will be done and not have to do this again (medication, soft foods, ice, etc).

If you are paying for this, it is also cheaper doing all 4 at once - only 1 anesthesia vs 2, or 4.

Teeth that are impacted usually require a little more work than those that are erupted. Sometimes we use a dental drill and cut them in half to make it easier to remove them. This is not a problem and will not hurt. The fact that you have braces on will not effect the procedure.

It's good that your'e having these widsom teeth removed, because if left there, they can push forward and cause anterior tooth crowding and ruin your nice orthodontic treatment.

Find a good, compassionate Oral Surgeon who has a gentle touch and you won't have any problems! Good luck.

I had 4 baby teeth removed. They just were not going to come out. Then 4 adult teeth were removed. And my 4 wisdom teeth were removed. You'd think I have none left. It was definitly worth it. I get a lot of comments about how nice my teeth look.

I had 4 teeth pulled at once~ but they put me to sleep for it. they gave me pain medicne for it afterwards but I didnt use it that much i was ok with tylenol. i dont have a high tolerance for pain, and everyones tolerance is different but i was ok with tylenol. i only used the percription once or twice

Getting braces dont hurt they can be a bit sensitive when they first go on when there tightened %26amp; they can ache a bit after wards but its not anythink bad!

As for the spacer i havent got a clue!

Reply:I'm assuming you're getting your wisdom teeth pulled, and braces put on. From what i've heard, braces can hurt to have them put on, but some pepole it doesn't hurt.

As for having a tooth pulled, it's the few days after ward that hurt.... just the healing process.

The invisible teeth braces clearly keep you from looking like a 'metal mouth' (an obvious plus), but they also take much longer to work. I'd go with the straight metal if I were you, just to get them over with (straight metal works a little faster than the metal and the bands, but they're kind of new).

Clear brackets are made of procelain or ceramic and break easily. They also cost more. Some orthodontists charge more to place the clear brackets and usually only put them on the top 6 front teeth. You will still have metal brackets on the lower teeth and the molars. As for Invisalign, Orthoclear, or Red White %26amp; Blue from Ormco, they are the plastic trays similiar to bleach trays that are only good for certain malocclusions. Usually mild retreats or to move 1-4 teeth only. Depending on the Orthodontist will depend on what you pay, but in my ortho experience Ormco's Red White %26amp; Blue is the least expensive. The clear brackets aren't any better than the metal ones. If you can find an Orthodontist that uses the Damon System brackets, I'd go for it. They are self ligating and move the teeth faster, with less office visits and less discomfort overall.
Reply:How long it takes depends more on your individual problem than the type of braces you get.

Invisalign are definitely more cosmetically appealing. They sometimes stain, and yes, you can see them, but you can take them out if needed. You can also brush and floss normally, and you don't have to worry about things getting stuck in them.

Metal braces are usually cheaper. They're quite painful when you first get them on (the metal digs into you lips and tongue at first), but compared to Invisalign, they're much less painful when you get them tightened. All of my friends with invisable ones had to miss a day of school for the pain! The most I ever had to do after the first week was take an Advil. Another small bonus about metal is that you never have to worry about losing them.

They also make white plastic ones that work just like metal but are less visible. I had those once, and after seeing what my friends went through with invisalign I'd definitely go with the platic traditional ones again if I had to do over.

My advice would be to not sweat it to much. They'll likely give you some novocaine to numb it or some laughing gas, so you won't feel it when it happens (though it will hurt the next day, sorry to say).

It shouldn't take to long, for four teeth though I'd guess anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how the dentist goes about it.

And yes, people do normally get teeth pulled before getting braces, because sometimes the braces wouldn't be able to straighten all the teeth otherwise and it would be pointless to even get braces then.

Reply:They give you some shots to numb the pain. I got two teeth pulled quite recently and that's why I stopped to read and answer your question. But, it doesn't hurt too bad, just like a slight pulling on your gums, the shots are the worst, and they aren't even that bad.

Reply:I had braces a looong time ago but also had to get 4 teeth removed, all adult teeth. I had too many teeth for my small mouth.

The teeth were removed, the braces went on, and 6-months later I had a great set of teeth (and still do).

Trust your dentist but if you're really worried I would get a 2nd opinion.

Reply:If you need to, you have to get them taken out to make room to straighten the teeth. It won't be so bad since you will have freezing. The worse you think about it the more scared you will be. My brother did it and he is a chicken so I wouldnt worry! Good Luck!
Reply:My son had some teeth pulled before braces. That's how it's usually done. It would be harder to remove them once the braces are in place. They will give you plenty of Novocaine, so you won't feel any pain. You might feel a little tugging, but it doesn't hurt. Afterward you should take some ibuprofen (Advil), because you might have a little discomfort once the Novocaine wears off, but it won't be anything you can't handle. Good luck!
Reply:It's not uncommon to have teeth removed before getting braces. It helps eliminate overcrowding problems.

I'm guessing they'll wait a while after the extractions to let your mouth settle down.

Extractions are typically pretty fast assuming their are no complications like impactions.

Ask for some nitrous gas if you're not going to be otherwise sedated. It will help the time feel as if it's going faster.

The teeth being pulled out, I know a thing or two... It won't hurt because they numb your mouth with novacaine and then they give u tyleneol w/ codeine. The makes you sleep all day. You can't eat anything hard for a few days. And you have to rinse your mouth with salt and warm water for about a week and a half. Other then that your good.
Reply:I actually just got braces on a month ago and teeth pulled, and yes they usually pull teeth before you get them on if your mouth is overcrowded because it gives your teeth space to shift. I didn't get any gas or valium when I got my teeth pulled (2 molars). They just numbed my mouth and pulled, the pressure is kinda weird but you don't feel any pain. Plus they give you pain meds after so any pain you may feel will be easily treated. GOOD LUCK!! AND DON'T WORRY PEOPLE GET TEETH PULLED EVERY DAY!! :)

Yeah, it really wasn't that bad. Especially since your getting yours all at once because then you only have to go through getting your mouth numbed and the blood 2 times.

My advice for you is to EAT ALOT before the appt, like I went to Bob Evans and ate crepes and sausages b4 my appt but i was too nervous to eat it all, so afterward i was hungry but its very hard to eat with gauze in your mouth. so dont be nervous and eat a lot so you wont be starving like i was.

And the morning after you get them pulled there will be blood and crap stuck to your toungue and the roof of your mouth, so try to drink a lot of water to prevent the caking.

And... relax while they pull your teeth because i didnt and i got SO dizzy i thought i would pass out. and i saw double. so relax and hold someones hang.

i had braces on while they pulled them but i think its more normal to have em pulled b4 you get them.

Reply:This was many, many moons ago but I had the same thing done to me before I got my braces put on. 4 permanent teeth removed, all done at the same time. I have a small jaw and needed to have the teeth removed so it would be less crowded then the teeth could shift around and become straight when the braces were put on. I was awake when it was done but was given shots of novacaine so I didn't feel any pain. Afterwards you'll be numb for awhile and packed with cotton. Your dentist may give you some tylenol with codine or you might be fine with just Advil.

It depends where and what type you want. If you do it in a border town with the US, it probably will be more expensive; however, most likely will still cheaper than in the US. If you do it, inside the republic you are going to get a better price. I do not know the exact price, but I paid $20 US dollars to get my teeth clean. I hope this helps.

Unless you are able to go down to Mexico every 6 weeks or so, it is not worth getting your braces there. Not many orthodontists take over cases that have been started by another doctor. I don't know one orthodontist that would take over a case and not charge you for their time and expertise. I had braces about 7 years ago. I wore a retainer afterwards like I was supposed to and they were perfectly straight. I now notice my front teeth are overlapping a little bit. Do you think this is because of my wisdom teeth? I really hate to get braces again but I think I might have to. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Reply:Yes, it is most likely the wisdom teeth, but have you still been wearing your retainers at night? That helps prevent the teeth from moving. Anyways, normally they require you to have your wisdom teeth out now if you get braces to prevent this.

My orthodontist told me that I have got to get 4 pre molars removed for braces, in order to make enough room for the rest of my teeth to get into line.

Can I not wait for my wisdom teeth to come out and instead get them pulled instead of my pre molars?

wisdom teeth are useless I hear, so I do not understand why I cannot wait for then to erupt and then have them removed instead of my pre molars.

There must already be crowding for him to want to remove 4 pre molars. The added wisdom teeth would cause severe crowding, which would not be a good thing, and would not be comfortable at all. When the wisdom teeth begin coming in your orthodontist will work with the dentist that will be pulling them.
Reply:You need to ask your orthodontist this question, or get a second opinion from another orthodontist.

He probably meant that, in addition to one day removing your wisdom teeth, you need to also have 4 pre molars removed for your braces.

The earlier you can get your braces, the better. If you wait until your wisdom teeth come in, you'll be 15 or 16 and that's not an optimum time to have your braces.

Ask him if it's worth waiting for your wisdom teeth.

okay i have braces for almost 3 months now.. after my two front teeth moved and been attached to each other, i noticed a very very small blackish spot on my teeth. it was in between the 2 front teeth. I also noticed that the black color is from myright front teeth..

what is happening? is this a sign of tooth decay? I floss floss and floss but still the black wont go away..

huhuhu.. im starting to be so sad and dissapointed..

Edited: You can go to either, whoever does your regular cleanings. If it is a cavity, they will drill it clean %26amp; fill it. The dentist can get to cavities very easily between the teeth.

Imagine it this way.

A man and woman with bad crooked teeth. They get braces. They end up with perfect teeth. Later on in life they marry and they have a child. Here's the question:

Will the child have perfect teeth if it's in their parents DNA? Or will the child have bad crooked teeth just like the parent's used to have, and so the child would have to get braces too?

Will a child whose parents had braces before have perfect teeth?
It is pretty unpredictable! It could go either way and can be affected by oral habits (like thumbsucking) that have nothing to do with Mom and Dad. Though my husband and I both had braces and I would'nt be surprised if my son needs them!

My orthodontist said that because my teeth are crowded and I have a "stuck" wisdom tooth I might have to have 4 teeth (2 on the bottom and 2 on the top) pulled to make more space in my mouth. He said that it is not for sure yet but likely--he might change his mind and I won't have my teeth pulled (that would be great), but I am REALLY nervous at the possabillity of my teeth being pulled.

If anybody can help me that would be great.

Reply:I did have then taken out and it was well worth it. Yes it sucked, but I was awake so if you can be put to sleep I would recommend it. Once the teeth are out they feel weird, the openings but once you braces start doing their things in a couple of years the spaces will be gone. If anything get a second opinion.
Reply:I feel your pain. I had 4 teeth pulled as well. The ones in the very back. I was nervous too but after it was over you feel better except for feeling crappy about the fact that you can't eat the foods you want. But the endless ice cream and Jell-o is great :0). The dentist will just numb you and taking the teeth out depends. if the tooth is under the gums and is pushing on your teeth he'll Numb the gums and he'll pull it out. The tooth is long, though; it's crazy! But he'll probably suture your gums or not and that makes space for your wisdom teeth. I don't know about your procedure but it might go somewhere along those lines, depending on the dentist as well. Hope this helps. Don't worry, you will only feel some pressure while the tooth is being pulled out, but that's about it. It's nothing to worry about. But hey, it's worth it. You get a nice smile when it's over.
Reply:don't worry it doesn't hurt. they numb your mouth (this hurts a bit)and pull it. when they pull it it just feels feels like wiggling a big tooth if they numbed it enough.I've had 4 teeth pulled also it is better to get them done 2 first and 2 a second time. it hurts a bit after , ice cream helps. get it done on a friday so u can rest for the weekend. good luck!
Reply:I just got braces 2 weeks ago and had to have four teeth pulled. All they do is just numb you with novaine and then they take an instrument and move the tooth back and forth to loosen it and then they pull it out. One of my teeth had to be surgically removed which meant that he had to cut down into the gum to pull it out. That was the only really painful site. Afterwards, you will still be numb for a few hours and you will experience some soreness. I had all mine done at one time, so its up to you and your dentist if you want to do it over 2 visits. It might be better to get them pulled all at once. I was just so anxious to get my braces so I just went ahead and did it to get it over with. Email me if I can be of further help.
Reply:dont worry. If you need teeth removed then they will give you pain medicine (probably local anesthesia to prevent feeling anything). You will look great when the braces are complete and the orthodontist knows what he/she is doing. Trust them they have done this before with other patients. Having teeth removed is common.
Reply:OK i had mine done 2 days ago. Here is how my day went.

It was a wednesday and i had to meet my orthodontist at his office at 8 a.m. I woke up as if it were a regular school day and met my ortho at his office. The guy who pulled them was only a couple of blocks from my ortho. so we walked and when i got there they called me back and i sat in the chair. Then he came in and gave me a q-tip with this numbing stuff. Then he gave me a 4 shots because like u i needed 4 pulled to make room for braces. The shot felt like a pinch and kinda hurt. Then he left for a couple of min and after 3 min my mouth was very very numb. Then he took this tool and pushed my tooth and this hurt the worst. Even with novacain. He told me to tell him when it was unbearable pain and he would give me more novacain. Well i ended up getting the shot 8 times. Once he pushed it around he took another tool and swirled it around and pulled it out. That didnt hurt at all. He did this 4 times and it took about 45 min. Then they put some gauges in. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! If you take these out your mouth will bleed profusly and it may take longer to get the braces on. You have to wear them for an hour afterwards. Then when i got out of the chair i fell because i felt lightheaded for some reason. Once i got back on my feet i had to walk ALL the way back to the orthodontists office to my moms car. And since i got all those shots my mouth was so numb i coudnt feel my own saliva. So i was drooling everywhere. I felt dehrydrated but my mouth was full with spit. But when i got home my gums really hurt. To my surprise they didnt pull the teeth like you do when you lose your baby teeth. They actually pull the roots along with it. I ate some ramen noodles when i got hungry and later i tried some chicken fingers but that didnt work out too good. My mouth was numb for about 4 hours afterwards. Chewing doesnt work because if anything touches your gums where the teeth were pulled it will hurt. If your gums are still bleeding hours afterwards put more gauges in. They will be purple for about a week afterwards but thats normal. Now its been 2 days and today i ate tacos at school for lunch. The only thing i wish i could stop is this feeling that when i move my tounge there is a hole. There is also a tickle sensation going on. I would suggest getting them pulled all at one time unless you wanna go through this twice. Just know that in 2 years you will have perfect teeth and it will be worth it. I hope everything goes well and you get what you want.

You should probably wait until after you get your braces off to do any kind of whitening. The reason why is because the spaces under the brackets will stay the same color while the rest of the tooth will become brighter and then when you get your braces off you will have a dark square on every tooth. I don't think you would want that. I don't know this for sure but I think that if you do try to whiten your teeth that is what will happen. Hope I helped.

Reply:Do NOT use a whitening toothpaste or any kind of gum.

The areas around the brackets will be white.. but under the brackets will still be the color of your teeth when you got your braces. I just got mine yesturday and she went over everything and she specifically said NO WHITENING PRODUCTS! There was a girl in the office who had just gotten hers off and she had done what they told her not to do and she had noticable scaring.

Just wait until you get them off to whiten your teeth.

I think you should ignore it, you shouldn't be taking your kid to the dentist either if she still has baby teeth, you're just wasting your money because you never know what her teeth will look like once her adult ones comes out, she may not need braces....but that's just me.

You are NOT wasting time by taking a child to the dentist while they still have primary teeth. Even though they eventually fall out, decay in primary teeth is a disease and can affect the entire body, not to mention HURT!!

Reply:you can tell when a girl is about 5 and when a boy is about 7 if they are going to need braces when they are older. It depends on the size of their jaw, positioning of teeth, size of teeth etc. It really would not hurt to have a consultation with an orthodontist at this age to get his opinion.
Reply:There are landmarks that we look for and use to judge jaw development. Jaw length as well as constricted arches or crossbites can be evaluated as early as age 2 on some patients. It is NOT age- or sex-dependent. Every child is different.

I send a child for orthodontic evaluation as soon as I have any indication that they are not going to grow properly. It is FAR better - not to mention, usually cheaper - to intercept a problem and guide growth than wait for it to all go to heck and then try to push and shove the teeth around where they should have come in in the first place.

My response to the people who say it's all about the money is simply that you are wrong. If it was all about the money, we'd wait until the child's teeth were really screwed up so we could keep them in braces fro 4 or 5 years. Besides that, most dentists do not make one penny from orthodontic treatment, because we send the child to another dentist - the orthodontist - and we don't get a penny from that treatment. "Kickback" is illegal in every state in the country, so nobody is stupid enough to try that. Don't even think it.
Reply:I agree 100% with Dr. Sam. Crowding, spacing and the upper and lower jaws not aligning with each other can be recognized at a very early age. Some of these orthodontic problems can and should be corrected early, while others can wait. There are currently methods available which help to correct skeletal or jaw relationships which need to be performed while the child is growing. After growth is complete, the teeth can be moved but the result might not be as good. An early orthodontic consultation can evaluate the teeth and jaws do determine when treatment should be performed. I am a dentist who referred both of my daughters to an orthodontist at an early age because I could tell that they would require treatment.

dark blue, an universal colour. many people i know have dark blue and it really matches their jeans and whatever they are wearing.

also, dark blue doesnt stain easily rather than the other lighter colours.

Reply:purple i think, that would look the cutest and would be the best colour for braces. my friend had purple braces and heaps of people loved them, although you can see them clearly (unlike clear braces, depends if you can afford them or not) at least what you can see is pretty and cute!!otherwise, maybe green or blue. whatever you do, just dont do yellow obviously!!!

I've also heard, though it's not confirmed, there is some LONG TERM side effect of getting straight teeth out of the deal too.

Reply:Pain on the first days... sore inside the mouth, and every time they adjust the braces the pain returns....easily treated with pain killers. If you do not maintain a strict regime of hygiene you might end up with stained teeth. The best side effect is that your smile is drastically improved, it is all worth it.
Reply:Since I currently am wearing braces, I can give quite a detailed account.

For the positive side, they straighten your teeth. Also, the color of the bands/ligatures can match your eyes/clothing/favorite sports teams, etc.

On the other hand, they can be quite a hassle to clean (flossing is a must), they cut your cheeks and gums up because of the exposed metal parts (especially when you first get them on and if they change bands), and you can get made fun of (which does not happen often at all). They are a special hassle when you play a brass instrument (namely a trombone, tuba, trumpet, or French horn)
Reply:sometimes they cut into your gums, but they make a wax that you can put on the braces where they cut in. your teeth get sore when you get them tightened. I would not advise drinking to much soda. I had my braces on for 5 years(it was supposed to be 2,but I moved a lot). I loved soda. that's all I would drink literally well to make a long story short the soda ate away at my teeth around the brackets. when I had them removed(they pull hard to get them off) It caused a couple holes in my teeth. so stay away from carbonated beverages.

I dont have crooked teeth but my top and bottom row of teeth dont touch. My mouth reshaped again from my strong tongue. Other than that there is no side effects.

Reply:It depends on what is going on in your mouth. It depends on each person, so they have to explain to you why they had a tooth extraction. Sometimes if there is crowding, teeth need to be extracted and then the teeth will be brought together with the braces.

you are exactly right. if you whiten your teeth with brackets on, they will more than likely leave discolored squares on your teeth. if you don't like the color of your teeth, try and brush better around the brackets. angle your toothbrush to get around them better. cut back on sodas, teas, coffee, etc...these things will stain them easier. ask your orthodontist when it is okay to whiten them after he/she removes your braces.
Reply:BIG NO NO! do not whiten teeth when your braces are on!! just brush brush brush that is all otherwise you will get colored marks where the brakets were glued in! if it becomes that bad of a problem ask your orthadontist they will know what to do.

I have braces right now, and i had a tooth coming in the wrong way, so i had a tooth pulled, and had to move another tooth to the side so the one in the wrong direction comes up to that new gap. Thanks to braces they have moved my tooth about 8 mm so far, ive had them 6 months now. Perfect way to go if you want to move your teeth across, up or down, or just a tidy-up. f you can afford them that is. ;)
Reply:Umm, my best friend's gap (which I don't think is that big) isn't able to be corrected using braces. She has had her gum at the front altered and is now getting veneers to make her front teeth appear bigger and closer together.

What are the results of not cleaning my teeth before getting Braces?

My last appointment was a year ago, and I can't brush my teeth really well. Today I got my braces on, and my orthdo said it was silly that I kept thinking that there would be horrible results, but I have a bad feeling about this. Plus, the night before I was really tired, so I forgot to brush my teeth. In the morning I managed to, at least, brush my teeth for 4 minutes.... I don't know, help :[

They are a big company, but their techniques just dont seem right.

No worries...orthodontist use an etchant to prepare the teeth and this removes everything on the surface. If you are not comfortable with what they did and have more questions, feel free to ask me as I work as an orthodontic assistant
Reply:You'll be fine. Once you get them off there'll be pieces of cement and stuff and you'll need a good cleaning anyway. Just clean them the best you can. There are picks you can use instead of floss, and use Listerine or some other antiseptic mouthwash.

Reply:I had braces already too. It would be good if you could have gotten a cleaning before your braces, since they won't be off for about 2 years or however long you have them for. But rememeber to brush and floss everyday, even more than you did without braces because food gets stuck a lot easier now. When you get them off, they will clean it for you and there will be food stuck in there.
Reply:hi, it's important to have good dental hygiene especially whenever have all this metal in our mouths(food becomes trapped in all that hardware). when that happens not only do we have to worry about cavities but also bad breath. another thing, if were not cleaning our teeth well enough the gums become infected (red, inflamed) to a point where they may grow over your brackets. not only is that unsightly but also unsanitary. purchase a water-pik, there not that expensive this will help dislodge any food you may have trapped, follow up with a good brushing. a fluoride rinse that you purchase over the counter would also be a good idea(rinse with that once daily). i know sounds like alot of work and it is,

but you'll be glad you invested the time let alone the money.

I am getting 4 pre molars removed and want to know if it will change your face structure much.

Also has anyone had there teeth moved too far ahead such as molers moving too far forwards in order to close the gaps?

I had four teeth extracted for braces. My teeth do not look out of place even though they are straight now. Your facial structure will not change at all.
Reply:i had 4 pre-molars removed and a brace put on last year and the gaps have now closed on one side but not the other.

i don't think it changes your face structure that much but my lips don't stick out as much as they used to.

Reply:I'm not sure what you consider a pre-molar. If you mean the bi-cuspids, they are usually the ones they choose to remove for overcrowded mouths. But if it's baby teeth molars, then they just need to be removed to begin the work.

Im not too sure about how much it is in the uk but in the us its about $3500-$5000. It really depends on how bad your case is and the dentist. Some charge more then others, some cases are worst then others... a dentist has to really see your teeth to see how much. you can try getting a basic ortho check.. and they could give you some ball park prices

Reply:Im not sure about the cost...but when you have them first put in they are a KILLER! You cant eat and your mouth is in pain :( especially cos they put a bar at the top of your mouth which makes it hard to eat, and its painful when you get them tightened. Usually its 18months for treatment but if your teeth are just overcrowded and not that bad like mine were i only had them in for 10months and then the retainer. It is worth the pain though having straight teeth! Trust me you don't stop smiling:)
Reply:Yea it is painful at first but it calms down once you get used to it. I only had mine on from august 05 to march 06 and my teeth were very bent!!! My dentist told me to use bongela or teething gel and it was brilliant. Just rub it on your gums and the pain is gone.....

i wouldn't whiten your teeth if you are under 18 because if you are younger, the nerves of your teeth are still close to the surface enamel so whitening them could damage the nerve endings and cause possible tooth loss later on in life, or maybe just dental problems down the road. use whitening tooth paste 2 to 3 times a day though, and floss.

Reply:Generally speaking, you can get your teeth whitened after braces, but some factors to consider waiting would be: 1. Any new cavities should be treated first, 2. Your teeth may already be sensitive and whitening nearly always makes them more so, 3. If you have any problems needing fixed with your front teeth, that should be addressed before bleaching is started. If none of these apply to you, you can always get a second opinion from another doctor. Hope this helps.

I had my braces off when i was 12. I had them on the top and bottom. I wore my retainer for years afterwards like I was supposed to. Finally my mouth grew too big for it. I'm now 24 and my front teeth are still moving a little bit. It is really upsetting because so much money was spent on braces and I did what they told me to do.

I don't want to bother paying to see if it can be fixed because I feel like I'll have to wear a retainer for the rest of my life. When do teeth stop moving???

Reply:Not to alarm you but our teeth are always moving. It's when the bite is not properly aligned that there is a problem.

After orthodontic treatment, if you do not want your teeth to shift out of alignment again (become crowded or spaced) you MUST wear your retainer for life! You need not wear them 24/7 or every day for life but at least a nightly a couple of times each week.

Protect the financial investment of your parents and the time investment you have in your smile. It's time for another retainer. It's far less costly than braces again especially nowadays (compared to 12 years ago.) Do this straightaway so that minimal correction can be made with an aligner-type appliance instead of metal, partial or full braces again.

You may only need a retainer. One should not cost over $200. That beats $5K+ and crooked teeth now that you're an adult!

You are absolutely right. You may have to wear a retainer for the rest of your life. That's just the way it is.

One of the first things they teach us in our orthodontics classes in dental school is that there is no guarantee that teeth will not move after treatment, be it one month, one year, or twenty years after the braces are removed.

Our teeth constantly want to shift. Especially our lower teeth. There is a constant pressure for them to shift forward in the arch, i.e. towards the middle of the front of the arch. That causes the overlapping of the lower front teeth you commonly see on older people. This happens in both arches, but is much more pronounced in the lower arch. For some people, the adjacent teeth are well-enough in line that no overlapping occurs, but for most, this isn't the case.

Basically, you should have gone back to your orthodontist and had new retainers made periodically. I seriously doubt that your doctor told you, "Adios, have a good life" without informing you (or your parents) that follow-up appointments might be necessary if the teeth were shifting out of place.

At this point, you have three options: 1. braces again, 2. Invisalign (you're probably a good candidate for it since your teeth have previously been straightened and the movements required to re-align them would be simple ones), or 3. leaving your teeth as-is and having a retainer made in order to prevent further movement. It might also be possible to have a retainer made that can re-align the teeth, but that's something your doctor would know. He/she might have other options.

I had braces for ten years and after mine came off I didn't really need whitening but I got it anyway. I think it would be wise for you to just whiten after you get your braces off because even if you do if before you may need to do it again. This way you can save your money.
Reply:U dont need 2 get ur teeth whitened when they put the braces on they get a tool that strips ur teeth clean so that the brackets will stick, and plus if u were to do dat the spots that under the brackets will be white while ur teeth will be darker so just let the orthodonist decide what is best not ur friends
Reply:No! Don't bleach your teeth right before putting braces on. The bleaching process interferes with the bonding agents they use to stick the braces to your teeth. You'd need to wait 3-4 weeks after finishing bleaching before the effects go away. Wait until after braces, it will be easier to do cuz your teeth are straight, and if there has been any discoloration during the braces, it will get rid of it.
Reply:I would whiten afterword, simply because there might be some spots that you didn't/couldn't brush as well as usual so it might turn yellow anyway and the other is because when they take off your brackets they have to make sure your teeth don't still have glue on them and so they file them so you might not even need it.

I work for a dentist the best thing to do is just keep your teeth brushed good. If you use any thing to make them white you will have two diffrent shades when you have the braces removed.

If you are wearing your retainers as directed, it is possible that your bottom one has gotten looser. The orthodontist should be able to tighten it, which might cause pain at first, but will straighten your teeth back out.

Well i got one tooth extracted. I'm getting braces in two weeks but, I'm not worried because if the dentist did that its because you didn't have space in your mouth and he is going to move your teethes on a way that one of your teethes will replace the one that he took off. Don't worry he knows what he is doing. You are going to look great! :)

My jaw and mouth are just too small for all the teeth to fit without crowding, so they took 2 out and I wore braces for 3 years and my teeth look perfectly normal. My braces were removed 13 years ago and my teeth would be completely straight except that I could not wear the retainers afterwards because they just could not fit comfortably in my mouth, no matter how small they made it.
Reply:I think you'll be just fine. I went through oral surgeory to have 3 of my wisdom teeth extracted and another tooth pulled before I had my braces put on. I'm about to have my braces taken off, and my teeth are looking great. Just trust your dentist. He wasn't trained for years in this field for nothing!

Is it ready to come out? Depends on how much it's wiggling... hehe... When I was younger, my godmother did the whole tying my tooth with string to a door then slamming it... OMG that was painful... I learnt that it was better to just loosen it with my tongue %26amp; eventually it came out.. Sometimes it hurt, but for some reason I was a freak %26amp; I enjoyed it??? I wouldn't use your fingers too much 'coz you can infect the gums around the new tooth.

im 19 and my ortho suggested i have 4 premolars removed in order to create space for braces. Note that this is after i just had 2 impacted wisdom teeth removed a few weeks ago. My main concern is that gettin these 4 teeth removed would mean that i would be deprived of 6 teeth which seems like a big number. Would this effect the shape of my face as it develops???Ive read on forums about people complaining that theyre face tends to develop to be longer and thinner after gettin teeth removed. Would this affect me?? At what age does the human skull and jaw stop developing??

19 yrs is almost an ideal age for orthodontics(Braces) although at 16 yrs it would have been a bit better and less tedious...but still at this age growth of the jaw might be in its final stages..anywayz the reason of extraction of your premolars is to create space in your lower and upper jaw as your teeth must be crowded and for bracres to work space is required so that movement of teeth can take place..

and ofcourse it will affect the shape of your face..but mostly for the good as it will create space for proper movement to take place in jaw...and i think that it wouldnt actually affect your mastication(eating.etc) as your molars are still intact(if molars are not present then thats another story because they are the most imp teeth for eating,etc.)...anywayz but still if you are v.concerned regarding extraction ask your dentist that is there anyother loophool to avoid extraction.alternatively you could take a second opinion from an ORTHODONTISTS(Specialist in orhtodontics)

Reply:I really think you should get a second opinion. It sounds like you are having a lot of teeth removed. Im not saying that is definitely wrong, but that's a major step that can not be changed once it is done. It is better to be safe than sorry and a second and even third opinion may be very beneficial! Dont go through with this until you are SURE that is what YOU want to do!

When I got my braces, I had four teeth removed as well. They were the first set of molars next to the canines.

It totally changed the shape of my face, and my face is much slimmer and longer. However, I think I look a LOT better. I just had too many teeth for the size of my mouth, and now I look just right. The bottom half of my face was very full before, and my cheeks were a lot fuller. It was difficult to close my mouth, and my teeth were crowded.

Talk to your orthodontist about your reservations, and see if there are alternatives to your treatment...but just about everybody has teeth removed, so I don't know what s/he'd come up with.

PS: I got my braces after I turned 19, and I still looked different. It's not so much about your face growing, as it is the shifting of the teeth that cause the difference in your appearance.

Reply:Only your orthodontist knows how to get you from where you are to where you're going orthodontically. Don't even consider your wisdom teeth at this point since a vast majority of the population needs to have them removed. Also, more and more people aren't developing wisdom teeth, period, as we refine our diet and need crushing teeth less and less.

The shape of you lower face may change somewhat due to your orthodontic treatment, but not because you have these teeth removed. Orthodontists make very careful measurements of facial and skull structures and know scientifically the proportions that are considered "esthetic" by most members of society. Things will change shape, but they will do so for the better. An alternative to pulling teeth can sometimes be orthgnathic surgery. This surgery involves breaking the jaws, wiring you shut, and have plates and screws placed. I would rather have some teeth removed. At age 19, you are most likely done growing, and your skull is almost certainly done growing. Gaining weight makes the head look larger, but that is a soft-tissue issue, not a skeletal growth issue. Your face will not get longer nor thinner at this stage of your life. I hope this helps.

A lot of times it isn't necessary to have teeth extracted for braces! I once had an orthodontist suggest that I have 4 premolars removed, too. I ran away as quickly as I could and went to another orthodontist who let me keep my teeth! I had braces for only a year and a half (would've had to have them for up to 4 if I had been trying to fix the empty space where the premolars had been extracted!), and even years later my teeth look great.

If you're concerned about it, I really really really suggest that you get a second opinion!! I don't want you to extract teeth for no reason like I almost did!!

Well a teeth whitening may look good, but did you know teeth whitening can also damage your teeth permanently. I suggeest you brush every night for at least 10-20 min. to get those yellow marks out. Also never put chemical whitning in your teeth they will not work and most likely to knock out your teeth.

Your gums are super sensitive for weeks after braces come off and those chemical whiteners will really ouch.

I have a homemade recipe for teeth whitener, take hydrogen peroxide a cap ful in a glass mug, put baking soda in it and make a paste, then use a wet toothbrush to rub that on your teeth, try not to touch the gums, (they turn white for a few minutes) its gentle enough to work and you can rinse and repeat as oftern as you need. It won't be Movie star white, yet it will be much cleaner looking.

Reply:I would just try to keep the teeth clean for now. Using a whitening toothpaste may help, but don't do any bleaching until you get your braces off. Otherwise the portions under the brackets will still be a different shade than the bleached portion. The whitening toothpastes and rinses won't be able to make a huge difference in two weeks. Just don't worry about it too much and take good care of your teeth while you undergo ortho treatment. Brush after eating and rinse your mouth out with water after you drink sodas or other acidic drinks. By the way.. don't do the hydrogen peroxide paste that was suggested. It has been shown that the free radicals in hydrogen peroxide can increase cancer risks if used frequently in the mouth. Good luck!

they do the first couple days, and when you need them tightened or a wire changed. they dont hurt as much as they are a nuisance. i had them when i was 11-14. they werent a big deal.
Reply:It doesn't hurt getting them on, but it hurts to get them tightened. You'll look like 80% of the rest of the teenagers in the world- nobody will laugh at you. Shortest time is about 6 months, longest time depends on how bad your teeth are.

People will not make fun of you, most will probably had it as well, other than that, there is no point to making fun of someone with it.

Reply:don't be nervous. the only time they will hurt is when they tighten them every month. but tylonol can fix that pain. im sure no one will make fun of you. you do want nice teeth don't you? i've had braces for 5 years. just got them off and it was all worth it. just brush your teeth, floss, and if you have to wear rubberbands wear them! the more you follow the directions given the faster they will get off.

Reply:The actually don't really hurt that bad. when you get them tightened, they are sore for about 3 days. Usually people have braces for about 1 1/2 to 2 years. People won't make fun of you at all. I first got braces on in 2nd grade, and SOME people made fun of me. Now, in middle school, 2/3 of the school population has braces.

Reply:Dont be nervous at all. Once you get them you'll be glad you did. They dont hurt ALOT, just a little bit. Nothing that you cant manage. If it really hurts you that bad, theres always pills you can take to relieve the pain.
Reply:Your mouth is really sore afterwards, but in less than a week the pain subsides. Seeing as braces are common in middle school/high school kids, I doubt anyone with a heart would tease you for them. ;) I think the shortest I've known someone to have them is a year...but then they didn't wear their retainer and they need to get braces again. :O

Reply:it will hurt for the first few weeks. You might have swelling in your mouth and cheeks for a week or two, but maybe not. When your wires get changed periodically, it will again hurt as increased pressure is applied to your teeth.

Reply:They only hurt me for about the first week after I got them on. This is because they are doing the initial pull on your teeth and so they will ache but later on they won't hurt at all.

Okay well TONS of people get braces. If they make fun of you...watch in about 2 years or so they will have to get them. Believe me it's not a big deal.

Shortest- I assume it can be a year.

Longest- I knew someone who had them for 4 years.

The average time is around 2 years. It goes by pretty fast as you get used to them

Reply:No it doesnt hurt when they put them on. They will make your teeth as dry as possible then put the brackets on with glue (which i will admit is nasty tasting) but it doesnt hurt. Then they put sunglasses on you and use a bright light to get them to stay then attach the wires. I was hella scared but believe me, nothing hurts. Its a bit sore about 2 days later though, not very badly.

I do NOT Think anyone will make fun of you. So many people have braces these days that no one does anymore.

I need them on for a year and a half and they have been on for a year.

Reply:The first few days that you have them your gums will be sore from them rubbing but then they will toughen up. The doc will give you some wax to put on them to help with this. It hurts some after you get the wires tightned. Because your teeth are shifting slowly. It will be a throbbing pain that will last for a day. A heating pad and motrin will help plus plan on eating soft foods the day that you get them tightned. Its not horrible but will be well worth it when you have straight teeth!! I had braces for three years and now I get compliments on my teeth all of the time.

It goes away after 2 or 3 days.Make sure you stock up on cold,soft foods. such as ice cream, yogurt, etc. Only really mean people would make fun of you. It is nothing to be ashamed of. Reply:ok, they do hurt at the beginning but you will get used to them. you have to have it for about 2 years but dont worry. kids probably wont make fun of you if your in 4th-8th grade, thats when most kids get them. the shortest is about a year, the longest is about 3.5 years. you probably wont have it for that long it just depends on your teeth. dont worry, lots of kids get braces though. hopefully, your in that age range. if you are, kids probably wont make fun of you because they probably will get them too. i got them in 3rd grade and didnt get made fun of, you probably wont. eat lots of soft foods such as applesauce, icecream, soup, ect. its hard chewing at the beginning. maybe fries and a shake. it hurts for a few days, youll get used to it though. hopefully i helped!

Teeth Bleeching with braces...?

Straight forward, I have very healthy teeth. No cavities or anything. But I did inherit my fathers not so great colored teeth. His arent bad, just not white. As for me, mine arent yellow or anything like that.. Just theres alot of room for improvement.

I brush 3 times a day using Crest active white. I also use Teeth whitner before I brush and Mouthwash afterwards... I also have braces so theres no option to really use whitestrips or anything for a quicker whiter smile.

I guess what im really asking is, Whats the best/ Safest way to get white teeth without having to use as many products as im currently using?

Save your money. You don't want to bleach while you still have braces because simply put, you can't bleach the part under the brackets and you don't want to have polka-dotted teeth! I have actually known someone, although this is the reverse, that smoked too much when she had braces her teeth were white under the brackets when they took them off and yellow around them. Yuck!

But, I think a good multi-function toothpaste is your best bet, meaning anti-cavity, anti-plaque, and whitening. If you do want to spend a little money to keep them as white as possible during the braces, buy Rembrandt or another higher end toothpaste. Furthermore...floss!

Another good piece of advice...stay away from dark, heavy, sugary drinks like colas and coffee. These can stain your teeth like crazy. Good luck!

The area under the brackets will still be the original color of your teeth and even professional bleaching may not get the whole tooth the same color if you are bleaching the exposed area and not whats under the bracket. Reply:I used the crest night paint. It was easier than the strips and you paint it on. I agree with everyone else that you'll bleach the teeth and it'll look funky after brace removal. I worked with a fellow dental assistant who bleached her teeth and the dentist hadn't removed all of her composite/cement from her braces. Her teeth were nicely spotted. Remember to take before and after pics to properly determine effectiveness of bleach; you don't want to end up like Ross on the show "Friends" Also you may be too hard on yourself; your teeth may be white to everyone else but just not you...Don't forget to research bleaching so that for any side effects that you're prepared (tooth sensitivity, gum sensitivity, etc.)
Reply:I wouldn't work so hard at the moment to go for whiter teeth. Keep them healthy, brush as often as you do of course, but using multiple products to give you whiter teeth right now will only result in polka-dot teeth when you get the braces off.

I'd use a simple one and wait it out. While it's something you notice, few people actually notice a person's tooth coloring when there's braces there anyway.

After the braces, absolutely do whatever you want to get your teeth white. I would suggest, if you're really serious about it, sticking with the professional whitening. The toothpaste, gels, strips, all that other stuff has little if any effect.
Reply:you should just wait until you get the braces taken off because if you do get them whiter, then they will most likely be discolored under the part where the bracket was...and plus, when you get your braces off, they are probably going to give you a bleaching kit so you can restore your teeth to a whiter color...

You definitely do not want to bleach your teeth while you have braces on. Stay away from whitning toothpastes and rinses. When your braces come off, the areas under where your brackets are placed will have maintained the original color of your teeth and they will probably look worse than if you had just waited.

the holes are cavities. its because they didnt brush, or they have a condition where they are prone to cavities because of weak enamel.

they also might have white spots which is decalcification, the regular dentist can fix those by polishing them out or putting some composite material on it.

Reply:EVERYONE has the ability to keep their teeth clean when they have braces. EVERYONE. There are no excuses for it. Make regular dental checkups, LISTEN to the hygienist when she tells you what tools to use and how to brush and how often, and most importantly, follow through.

People get "holes" or cavities or decalcification on their teeth after braces from not taking care of their teeth while the braces are on. It is imperative that you keep your teeth clean, above, below, and in between the braces. And get floss threaders so you can floss too.

If you can keep your teeth clean, you are NOT going to have problems.

All services will only pay for 50% of braces and that is only till the age of 23 after that you are on your own, that's if you are military dependent. The SM can get braces 100% paid for.

If you are a dependent. You get 1200 dollars per year to use on dental 1500 for special circumstance. That means if you want braces and it cost 3000 dollars. The military will pay 50 percent. And you have a 1200 dollars credit. If you use that 1200 dollars. You don't have no more credit for that year. And you well have to pay everything else yourself.

If you are the sponser its totally free

Reply:Stop listening to rumors like the one surgery thing. The military and the AF will take care of all of your medical and required dental needs while you are on active duty. Braces is a long shot and will only happen if your teeth are so out of wack that you are physically unable to do something because of the current teeth postioning. If they are just a little crooked here and there do not count on it. You cannot deploy anywhere with braces on so the chances of you getting them are slim. Also you won't be able to enter the miltary if your teeth are too bad off and cannot be corrected by non-orthodonic procedures. Basically if they can't pull your teeth on fill your teeth you aren't getting in. Lots of people have crazy looking teeth but still don't get braces and still get to enlist. What you can do is save and put money away so when and if you ever get out you can pay to have the braces put on yourself. The AF pays you more than enough money and you shouldn't have to pay for anything the first few years except spending money so you will have lots of money saved in the bank if this is important to you.
Reply:For active duty...if the braces are medically neccessary (problems with bite, severe alignment issues, etc) they will pay for them 100%. For family members, it is a different story. If you are stationed overseas, where all medical services must be provided by the base because of language issues, family members will be given braces at no cost. However, if you are stateside or in an area where you can go off base, family members must go to an off base provider (most base dental clinics in the US treat active duty only). If that is the case, Tricare kicks in. Tricare will only pay $1500 towards the cost of braces..period. The rest of the cost is the responsiblity of the military member and his family. My daughter has braces. We are an active duty family. The total cost was nearly $6000..the military paid $1500 and we are paying the other $4500 on our own.
Reply:dependent or AD? dependents must enroll into the Dental insurance first. there is a cost share and a maximum payout of $1500 for braces. also, they will only do it for children under 18. Adult dependents do NOT get braces covered.

for AD: they can be gotten at no cost, but there are restrictions as to when and where you can have them. you cannot be in a deployable billet.

and no, the AF does NOT PAY for any cosmetic surgeries unless they are deemed medically necessary.

There is no waiting period on having the teeth bonded after the braces are off. However, you should consider waiting until the gums have a chance to get less swollen (a common side affect of braces), you can have the teeth cleaned to remove any debris (plaque, tartar and stain) and if you want to whiten them you should do that before bonding so the bonding will match the new lighter tooth shade. Tooth bonding material (commonly called composite or resin) won't get lighter with the use of whitening products.

The bonding is fairly simple. Usually the tooth is prepped with some drilling of the tooth surface (you may or may not need anesthesia) and then the tooth has an etching material put on it to help the bonding stick, then the putty like bonding material is put in place and hardened by holding a special light on the surface. After you are done you are safe to eat and drink right away.

i just got a bunch of that orthondic treatment today. my orthodontist reshaped my teeth and put on braces at the bottom. two of my back teeth are "falling inwards" so he has to put those molar bands on those as well as my back molars to pull them up and im in terrible pain. ive taken an advil and tried to get some rest but nothing works. anyone have any suggestions? please and thank you :(

I swear to god, my mom did this at least 4 times (in the 2 years I wore them) on the day I had my braces tightened.

That'll be a no. But, you're going to be pretty sore for awhile. Think soft foods and lots of shakes. The cold will numb the teeth, and it's soft. No chewing. Before you get them on, take some ibuprofen. Then take some that night before bed. Not going to lie, the next morning is going to feel pretty bad. But, you'll get used to it.

Reply:Having them put on doesn't hurt. After they're on, your teeth start to hurt. The first couple days are torture, and every time you go to get them tightened is awful. Hang in there, think of how straight your teeth will be when you're done.

Well, I'm thirteen, and I have braces.

When I didn't have braces, I didn't brush my gums/the very tops of my front teeth. Now the very tops of my front teeth are yellow. I brush them all the time [a few times a day with lots of tooth paste] and I also use whitening mouthwash, but they still won't whiten!

I have braces also. You don't want to drastically whiten your teeth because then the parts of your teeth which are covered by the metal things will be a different colour to the rest of your teeth.

DON'T brush with lots of toothpaste! don't use more than you need, you only need around a pea size and they sometimes have the amount you need specified on the box. Use a SOFT toothbrush and brush around 2-3 times a day, not drastically more i would say 4x at absoulote most. Brush your teeth for around 3 minutes.

I read in a magazine that according to the American Academy of Periodontology, that gum disease, cavities and missing teeth are as good at indicating heart disease as chloesterol levels. So it is very important to look after your teeth.

No more than once a week, you GENTLY brush your teeth with a 50/50 mixture of bicarb soda and sea salt. don't SCRUB but be very gentle. if you scrub you will wear away the tooth enamel which will make yellowing of the tooth.

also it is very important to floss. do this after every meal, at least once a day. Do not snap the floss on the gum line and use a clean section of floss for every gap you floss. floss around the tooth not straight up %26amp; down between teeth.

i was wondering about what your teeth look like after braces. I mean, i know that they are gonna be straight. But...ya know when you have a piece of furniture and you go to move it to clean it and the spot it was covering is a different color than the rest of the carpet? Does that happen with your teeth if you have braces. Because, really it is the same concept. Wouldn't it look strange if you just had a bright white or a yellow square spot on your teeth where your braces were for 2 years. Because its not like you can brush under the brackets where they have the glue.

it doesnt work like that. the colour of your teeth that is covered in the braket will stay the same colour until you get your braces off. And you just have to brush the outside bit and keep it healthy. some people do get stains after braces but its only because the stained the OUTSIDE of there teeth from not brushing or eating 6 candy bars and day and 10 cans of coke. only like 1 in 100 people get stains after braces, most common cause becoz they didnt have good oral hygiene

I am having a lot of problems with my mouth over the last few months. I went to the dentist and he told me that I still have a baby tooth and I was born without two of my permanent teeth [two of the front bottom teeth].

He thinks I should pull the baby tooth and get braces to make room for two dental implants.

The whole thing freaks me out. I don't want to be toothless, and I also don't want something foreign in my mouth that is destined to "fail" sometime or another.

I am also curious as to if I could just get braces and pull everything together and just leave some space in the back - possibly room for my wisdom teeth when they come in.

I am an education major very close to graduating and I don't want to have a physically negative appearance in the classroom. I have been constantly crying over the last few months after I heard the news. I really would like to hear comments from professionals who could possibly put me to ease.

Missing Teeth / Dental Implant / Braces?
Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years and have implants. Many of them. And please promise me to stop crying over this. IT IS a solvable problem and you will not look bad or will they fail. In fact, implants will out live you. The baby teeth will fail. This you have no choice, they have to go. The braces will make room and more importantly, the implants will look more natural and better than the baby teeth. It all takes time, but the end result will be wonderful.

This is what I would do. I would make either a Maryland bridge that fills the gab and cements onto the neighboring teeth to take up the space of the baby teeth. The Ortho can bypass this and cement brackets and add the wire to the natural teeth and move them into position. Once this is done, remove the bridge and sink the implants. You can recement the bridge until the implants heal in place and the final crowns can be placed. NO ONE will know BUT YOU! And there is no space to be embarrassed about.

The second option is to wear a flipper that has two teeth on it and no one will know but you. I think this is not the best of choices as you can remove this and it can come out easily.

What I have done for patients, is make the Maryland bridge with a temp. material, costs less and you can have a good look. Once the teeth shift, sink implants and make a partial denture for the space. This hooks on to your natural teeth and is less likely to move when you talk or laugh. I have also re-cement the Maryland bridge for 3-4 months and the patient has no concerns until it it time for final impressions. Then still use this so no one knows and it looks great. It will cost a little more, but you wil have a full set of teeth, stop crying about it and get on with a great career. THIS is a TINY speed bump in your life. A good dentist will never let you walk around missing teeth and look terrible. I will never allow any of my patients to angst over this. If I have to make the temporary myself I do. Believe me, I have 11 implants and 5 are in the front, do you think my patients ever saw their dentist without perfect teeth? Never. So please calm down, this is easy to do. If your dentist can't find someone that can. I do this all the time and my patients love me. The reason I care so much is I have been in the same situation. If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie.

Yes it is possible that the baby tooth will crap out. When it does, an implant may be in order. By that time you may have dental insurance and they might even cover a portion. SWEET! Dental implants have come a long way over the last 20 years. They are costly, but do last when done correctly.

If you have a malocclusion, see an orthodontist to see if braces can help this situation. They are in a position to scope out what needs to be where.

If you have dental insurance now, you should be able to get a panorex (full lower face xray) done under your coverage by your dentist. Take that xray to the orthodontist and get a consult. Most orthodontists will do a consult for a minimal fee.

Don't worry about looking professional in the classroom because of your teeth. The kids will love it if you have to get braces. Now quit crying and finish you school work to the best of your ability.

Okay, I went to the ortho a year ago, and then my mom decided to wait cuz I needed to get 4 teeth pulled. So, I just went yesterday, Im getting the 4 teeth taken out soon, then getting the top braces on 2 weeks later. Is there anything I should know about teeth pulling or braces? Im getting 2 teeth pulled, then waiting 2 weeks for those to heal, then getting the other 2 pulled, then 2 weeks later getting the top braces on. Oh yeah-does a cavity look a tiny bit yellow, like not yellow but not perfectly fine? My friend wanted me to ask that part. So does it look a tiny bit yellow????? With no visibly hole or no black spot, and some sensitivity at random times, not when eating??? Is that a cavity???

Braces are fine, I've had them 3 times because my tongue pushes my teeth out of place. I also had to have 4 teeth pulled because my mouth was so crowded. It is not really a big deal, hurts for a little while, but works out in the end. I would get the four done at the same time, it's what I did and then you only have the pain once. I truly appreciate having had braces now. I have a goregous smile and get lots of compliments!

If you have a choice, ask if your orthodontist uses the Damon system. It is a new system of braces that is less painful, a lot quicker, uses NASA technology and does not use the metal bands, which makes them better for your teeth.

The one thing you need to remember with braces though, is to BRUSH! I can not emphasise that enough. I bushed, but not as well as I should have and ended up with a little decalsifiction, or white spots on my teeth. I regret that. So for your sake, please brush really well and you will love the result.

As for your friend's question, the only person who can answer that is a dentist. If there is any question about a cavity it is important to see a dentist before it gets really bad.

Your friend should go to the dentist. Any discoloration could be an early warning and the sensitivity is definitely something to be checked out before it turns into something worse.
Reply:I actually had to get 4 teeth pulled myself before getting braces because my mouth was too small for all of them! It sucks, but just hold on, close your eyes, and imagine it is not happening. That is all I can really say. As far as if it is a cavity...the only way you can really know is if you go to a dentist. Also cavities tend to have black, not yellow, but it doesn't mean that you don't have a microscopic cavity forming.
Reply:the most important thing to know about getting teeth pulled, is avoid getting dry socket! Ask your dentist what to do to avoid "Dry Socket"!!!

Reply:i have braces and have had them since feb. 15 of this yr. the only thing u need 2 do with braces is when u get them put on..the cement that they put on the bands..and if u dont kno what that is that is the metal ring that they put on ur 2 back teeth.. that cement is just awful and really sour!! but other that that when u get ur braces tightened they hurt 4 atleast 2 days but getting braces just put on it will prolly hurt 4 about a week...keep them brushed really good and dont drink many soft drinks....i cant tell u n e thing about gettin ur teeth pulled b/c i didnt have to get that done....hope that helps ya! ♥

Also be sure to wear your retainer afterwards for as long as you are told to, even if you don't think you need it because the teeth WILL go crooked again!

A dentist couldn't answer your other question without seeing the teeth (and if they did, I wouldn't go to them!) so I doubt anyone here could.

Reply:The first thing you need to know is, if you are not absolutely committed to getting braces AFTER your teeth are extracted, you will create a problem that is worse than what you may currently have. For this reason, most orthodontists will make sure the patient is in braces THEN refer to a dentist to have the teeth extracted. Most will make sure the commitment has been made before having a patient extract healthy (usually healthy) adult teeth for orthodontic purposes. If for some reason you do not get the treatment started and the teeth have been extracted, there is bone loss and the spaces at the extraction sites will be unable to be closed completely if this occurs. Also, if braces are on all teeth except the 4 (in your case) to be extracted, it's a no-brainer which teeth are to be removed. (Remember the wrong leg was amputated for a diabetic patient?)They now mark legs, (L)eft or (R)ight if it's the one to be amputated!

Additionally, teeth continue to extrude until they hit something (other teeth). If the teeth have been extracted, the teeth mesially and distally will begin to tilt toward the extraction sites. The teeth on the opposite arch will also super erupt if they do not occlude against other teeth. This creates more problems.

You're committed, get the extractions. We won't feel a thing (you will)! (Sorry, couldn't resist) It will heal fine and you'll have no problems. I will caution you, closing the extraction sites won't be a piece of cake but nothing tylenol or advil can't handle.

About braces, brush and floss after each meal. Request a prescription flouride (if one isn't given to automatically). One should be given to you and included in your case fee.

Follow the rules: NO hard, crunchy, chewy or sticky foods while wearing braces.

You'll be absolutely proud of your investment in YOURSELF!

Tell your friend she probably doesn't have a cavity but not to trust me. Trust her dentist. Get in for an exam, checkup and cleaning!
Reply:I would suggest to you to get all 4 teeth pulled at the same time, it will be a quicker recovery. I had 6 teeth pulled and braces a week after and talking from experience, it is much better to get them all done at once. The pain is not to bad depending on how you teeth are position and the procedure that needs to be done. For me i had 4 cut out of the gums and 2 pulled so healing time was about one week and after 4 days of having them pulled i had braces put on. If you seperate the procedure, eg. pull 2 now 2 later it will take you a bit longer to heal and may scare you so that you do not want to return for the other 2 to be pulled. I was put to sleep for this so i did not feel a thing but if you are having it pulled i hear it is a differant story.

I had braces when I was a kid and had my wisdom teeth out as a teenager. I never had a retainer but the dentist gave me a bite appliance instead ( soft plastic, kind of like a mouth guard) the use for an hour a day in the year or so right after they came off and occasionally afterwards too. They looked great afterwards but now it seems like my front teeth stick out more than they did then, and the two teeth next to them on the right side are turning in just slightly. Would a retainer fix this? If anyone has experienced this or knows about dentistry I'd appreciate your insight, thanks.

There are retainers and then there are "retainers." You are talking about actual tooth movement and not simply holding your teeth in place after finishing with braces. It is possible that you can achieve what you want with a retainer-like appliance. For this kind of service, which could take from a few months to over a year, you can expect to pay an appropriate fee. In my office, for one arch, this would range from $600 to as much as $1,000, depending on the complexity and length of treatment. I understand that you are just looking for an idea, but I don't want you to think you can get what you are looking for for $100-200 either.

Invisalign would probably work also, but at 3-to-4 times the cost.

Reply:I currently have braces, and I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed last summer. The intent in removing them is to provide space for the teeth, as part of the reason why teeth become crooked, or the bite becomes distorted, is the crowding that occurs overtime as teeth grow, and your jaw doesn't have the room to contain them all.

My guess is that your wisdom teeth were removed too late; since you had braces as a kid, your teeth were straightened then. However, as you grow, I guess they slowly began to conflict for space.

You need braces to actually take advantage of the new space that the wisdom teeth provides. In other words, they should have been removed before you had braces (though they are usually only removed in your teenage years).

Sorry if this is confusing. But basically I'm saying, you DO need some new straightener, either a retainer or braces, to fix your problem, and it should work because you've had your wisdom teeth removed.

Teeth Moving After Braces?

I've gotten my braces off about 1.5 years ago. Lately I've been noticing that my teeth have been moving more and more. I'm starting to see bigger gaps between my lower teeth. I've only worn my retainers (clear plastic ones) for a month after braces and only wore them at night until now. Do I need to get braces again? Or will my teeth get better if I start wearing my retainers 24/7 now?

I'd recommend wearing your retainer 24/7 for maybe a month or so, then only at night for a few months, then every other night... and so on, just like you would if you had just gotten your braces off. Try that before you decide to spend all that money and time on braces again. You should have followed the orthodontist's directions in the beginning.

Whether or not this is the case, it may be possible to avoid getting braces again if you get to your dentist or orthodontist as soon as possible for an examination. The longer you wait, the more likely it is that you'll need braces again.

Is this cleaning advised by your dentist ? As far as I know, you can not clean your teeth with braces on. After the braces are taken off, your dentist will clean them himself/herself. Anyway,it is better to get them cleaned after your treatment is done.

Reply:Not to worry. Firstly - it is important to get a regular clean because with braces on it is harder for you to remove all the plaque 100% which means irritated gums, tartar build up etc. Your teeth will be a bit mobile as long as they are being moved and also for a while after the braces are taken off. This is normal as the bone and tissue around them is reforming.

Your hygienist/dentists will be aware of this fact and treat you gently. Both of these professionals have a special training that includes treating people with braces on.

They can also show you how effectively remove plaque from around the brackets, under the wires and even how to master the floss with all the goodies on (yep, it is possible:).

So don't worry and if toy feel a bit nervous about it, let them know and ask for explaining everything to you. They will be happy to do it.

Now, I have a large gap and I really need braces, but my baby teeth have not given any signal of budging my whole life. Is it possible that they aren't going to come out? Reply:You need an x-ray to see where the teeth are or if they are there at all.

When you first meet with your orthodontist s/he will do all of the proper diagnostic films and records and then can tell you what your mouth needs. If you have not lost the baby teeth yet, you might not have permanent ones under them. There are some people who just do not develop certain permanent teeth. You may be one of them.

Ok first things first I want to explain why I'm asking. I'm getting married in about 1year 3weeks and I hate my smile. I never show my teeth when I smile because they're a bit squinty. I don't want to have to avoid smiling at my wedding though, or cringe when I get my photos back. My teeth aren't bad enough to NEED braces but I really want them. I'm not rolling in cash either.

The last one I looked at, invisalign, ranges in price from £3000 - £7000 which is just too expensive for me! Does anyone know of a chepaer alternative without me having to go through the 'brace face' look (as an adult I'd be too embarrassed and worried they weren't off before my wedding next year). Also does anyone know if I can get help with costs through private dental care even though the braces aren't needed I just want them. Any help would be greatly appreciated

you can get braces which sit on the inside of ur teeth as oppose to the outside. so they'd be invisible. i dont know how much these cost tho but worth looking into if you want them that bad.

Reply:Go to see a dentist to see what would be best although if you didn't to do something that would take a while teeth straightening. I'm 13 and had six teeth removed to make enough room for the rest of my teeth and now i'm fine. My twin sis had the same done but she had to have retainer. They are a seethrough brace that you wear at night. Although he had to wait about 1 month and a half to get our teeth done and they were done half at a time so it was about a week in total.
Reply:Well if you ask your dentist (if you havent already) about braces. Usually, your dentist decides if you need braces or not. If he/she says 'yes' then you shoudlnt have to pay but if he/she says 'no' then you would have to pay because you wouldnt normally need them.

Actually braces work fast. My teeth were quite bad and i wore them for 1 1/2 years and now my teeth are amazingly straight. too straight infact. and you can ask anytime for your dentist to get them off so you could get them off in time for your wedding.

But depending on whether you need them that much or not will say how much you would need to pay. And if you did need to pay then i would look around at many orthodontists as there are quite alot around (already 5 in my town) as the prices will vary alot.

I wore my retainer for the first 3 months or so, but i hardly wear it at all now and its been about a year. will my teeth move much, because a can fell some minor shifting and sometimes when i push m tounge up against my 2 front teeth it fells as if im shifting them, anyone experienced this?

I had braces for 2 years and only wore my retainer for about 6 months, that was 10 years ago and now my teeth have moved back into their origional position (my 2 front teeth are crossed over)

the reason you are given a retainer is because with all the movement you need time fore the surroundng bone to grow into the new position, without a retainer there is nothing stopping them!
Reply:They will move. This is why you have a retainer. If your retainer no longer fits well go have your orthodontist adjust it.

Reply:I also had braces before. I only wore my retainers for around 6 months. After 2 years, I noticed my two lower front teeth moved and now have some spaces in between. That made me visit my orthodontist for a new retainer since my old one doesn't fit anymore. My orthodontist advised me to wear it as often as I can. Well, of course you know how inconvenient it could be that's why I only wear it usually at night and whenever I'm home. I would advice you to do the same.

I got my braces off and wore my clear plastic retainer every night as instructed for the first 4 months. However, it hurt each night and would keep me up/wake me up in the night. So I haven't worn it for about 6 months now. My teeth have shifted and I have the starting of a noticable gap. The retainer still fits, more or less, but is very painful. Reminds me much of the horrid "power chains," but perhaps worse.

My question is, will pushing through the pain and wearing the retainer 24/7 for a while (couple/few months?) cause the teeth to shift back into their post-braces places like an Invisalign tray would do?

for not having worn them for several months, you need to go back to the orthodontist to have your retainer refitted to be positive it will adjust the shifting and your retainer should never be painful if you had your braces on for the appropriate amount of time, the retainer isn't meant to position your teeth further after braces but to keep them in position. there should only be mild discomfort if any and I am an advocate of wearing your retainer as long as possible because as you have found out, your teeth will shift.

But above all, after 6 months without it, GO TO the orthodontist to have it refitted! do not try to force them back with the same old retainer
Reply:This happened to me too! Personally, I don't like my clear retainers. The top ones are fine, but the bottom ones make my gums bleed and swell. But, I put them one one night and by the next day, they looked way better. You should try it!
Reply:it should move your teeth back. but 6 months is a LONGG time to not be wearing a retainer. i'd wear them non stop for a long time unless you want to be back in braces!
Reply:Anytime you go a long time (say about a month) without wearing your retainer, you should consult your orthodontist. Please do not try and "fit" the retainer into your mouth. You say that you have noticed a gap, then definitely go back to your orthodontist because they can make adjustments to your retainer (if you have a hawley) or either give you other instructions if you are wearing the clear one that fits like a mouthguard.

I had them for nearly 3 years. I hated them and couldnt wait to have them off but my stupid dentist wouldnt and i had to literally beg him to take them off before my year 10 formal. I mean, they worked, but they are a pain while they are there. I was supposed to have them for 12-18 months and like i said it ended up being 3 years.

I had them twice. 3rd grade - 5th grade, and then 8th grade- junior year of highschool. it sucked, but I guess it was worth it. :D

Hey everyone. I'm new to Yahoo, and I'm just wondering if the helpful people here can help me out. Recently I switched dentists, and on my first trip (just for cleaning), the dentist noticed that a pair of my teeth were still baby teeth, but they were stuck in my mouth as hard as rock. She did an x-ray, and found out that I was born without adult teeth there. Here's a picture, not of my mouth, but I labeled it as if it were mine.

Anyway, we need to pull those 2 so that I don’t have 2 baby teeth when the rest are adults, and so they don't ware down easily. So I'm getting fake ones in, then I'm getting braces because the teeth (circled in yellow in the picture) have adult teeth above them, which are going sideways. Luckily I have space in my jaw. So I don't fear of getting the braces on, actually I look forward to it. The part I regret is getting the teeth pulled. More info in my next post.

1. What is it like to get teeth pulled?

Depends on who is doing it. If you are comfortable with your dentist, then you should be okay.

2. What is the process?

You are numbed, a wedge is stuck in your mouth so you can't bite down, the dentist yanks out the tooth with pliers while the assistant might hold your head steady.

3. How does it feel during/after they are pulled?

You are told to take Ibuprofin for the pain. If you need something stronger, they should give you a perscription. It feels weird at first to have a blank space in your mouth, but you get used to it. The gum will be sensitive and you'll drool blood a lot.

4. What is the most painful part, and if you can, describe how painful?

If it is done correctly, the process itself should not be painful. It is afterwards that you have to take meds and relax and recover. The blood is scary, but it only bleeds, like, 8 hours!

Reply:The most painful part is the needle in the gums to numb you, but it's not unbearable. Then they just yank them out unceremoniously. Afterward, you shouldnt smoke or drink out of a straw to avoid dry socket. And they'll give you pain meds to make you feels better. I had three pulled for braces, and it wasnt so bad.

although they will inject you several times in order to numb it and that does hurt

you wont feel much although you will feel a lot of tugging because i had two baby molars removed and the first time they did not tell me and they took it out

it was later that i realized they had taken out a molar

they recently took an adult tooth out in order to put braces and it doesn't hurt but they will tell you to put a gauze over it and keep it their like for a day and mostly thats all

it will feel like your missing something in your mouth later on
Reply:I had 4 teeth pulled of braces and was only numbed for it.Honestly it didnt hurt that bad as i thought.More then likely though they will either put u out or give u laughing gas for it.and u wont feel a thing well the procedure is going on.Normally they will give u some form of pain meds after the procedure and if they dont u can just take tylenol.

Your mouth will bleed for awhile.at least a day if not more.Just sleeping woud be the best thing until the pain goes away.

I'm 13 and I've had 5 baby teeth pulled and 4 adult teeth pulled for room in my mouth b4 braces. this sounds weird, but the worse part is the novacan shot and not the actual teeth being pulled. The novacan shots are just a couple quick pinches. Thats all. The teeth actutally being pulled is the least painful part. they numb you up real good so you don't feel a thing. If I could handle having my first tooth pulled at the age 8 (plus, im a girl), Im sure You'll be fine
Reply:i just had that done a while ago they will put wire on your stomach then they will give you laughing gas to put you to sleep try not be nervous. it didnt hurt but my mouth was swollen and sore so i couldnt eat much but soup and ice cream for a couple days and they give you pain killers too

I'm 27, I have dull pain all the time from my bite (the pressure is on the UR2 tooth). My dentist says I need another brace (I had braces as a teenager). She says I might need teeth out to make space but as I already had my "4s" and wisdoms out, I dont really want any more teeth out (I have 24 teeth, no decay). But I dont want my bite to destroy my upper front teeth...so I dont know. I still have space from my wisdom teeth extractions, maybe my teeth could be pulled back a bit or something. I know its difficult to comment without seeing them/being an ortho but hey, its lunchtime and Im bored.

It sounds like you have had lots of teeth out, is there nothing else they can do? Otherwise, you just need to grin and bear it, i suppose.
Reply:i would recommend finding out which teeth they are talking about taking out first, as you really need to make an informed decision about this.

moving your teeth all back takes a very long time to do and also can make your face look sunken which i know you would not want, the canine teeth and the front one's define your profile and if all are moved back you may not like the result.

sometimes they take out the first molars to make a bit of room but in your case it may be too much space so the 5's would be the other option, but again without knowing how much space is needed i cannot advise you on that.

you may have space between your back teeth that the front ones can be spread out into to give you a better bite so moving top and bottom teeth will be needed in any case.

another option to make space if needed is to have about 1mm filed off of each tooth between them where they meet, this does not harm the teeth or make them any weaker.

go to the orthodontist and find out what they recommend as normally you have more than one choice what to do.

Keeping Teeth White with Braces?

I've had my braces on for almost a year now, and will have them on for another year. I never really had sparkling white teeth before they were put on, but I was fine with that. The problem now though is that a couple teeth in specific (the right vampire fang and canine next to it) just are yellow, all the time, as are some of the teeth on the bottom of my mouth. And now, over all my mouth is starting to become a little yellower around where the braces are attached. I brush my teeth every morning and night, and usually try to brush my teeth after a meal if I can.. and I just tried pure baking soda, which I hear can be abrasive so i've only used it once.

Any suggestion?? I use ACT mouthwash because it says it promotes healthy tooth enamel, and my usual toothpaste is the arm%26amp;hammer baking soda one.... it's really frustrating because smiling has become somewhat of an issue. Is there a certain tooth brush I should use with braces to reach the tough spots?

Keeping Teeth White with Braces?
You need a good toothpaste I think a good multi-function toothpaste is your best bet, meaning anti-cavity, anti-plaque, and whitening. If you do want to spend a little money to keep them as white as possible during the braces, buy Rembrandt or another higher end toothpaste. Furthermore.floss!

Another good piece of advice.stay away from dark, heavy, sugary drinks like colas and coffee and DON'T SMOKE These can stain your teeth like crazy.

Do NOT try to whiten your teeth while you have braces on. The area under the brackets will still be the original color of your teeth and even professional bleaching may not get the whole tooth the same color if you are bleaching the exposed area and not whats under the bracket. Just be patient and wait till they come off, then go ahead with the bleaching and they will look great.

That's something that the orthodontist can decide better than anyone else. Ask him, and take his advice.
Reply:Honestly, it's best to go with whatever the orthodontist/dentist thinks is best. They're the ones that are qualified on the matter, rather than whoever may choose to post a reply to your question.

On the topic of having teeth pulled though, in the end you're still 4 teeth short of what you were originally. As long as they're not removing the canine teeth or any at the front(which they definitely wouldn't be), there shouldn't be any difference in the final appearance after the braces are off.
Reply:Either one is going to hurt. It will be easier on your son probably having the 4th one pulled cause it's just closer to the front so the dentist want have to be all up in his mouth. Asthetically your son might want the 5 th one done b/c it want show as much when he smiles that he has teeth missing.

But let the dentist or orthodontis make that choice he knows best. But if you have the choice the 4th are easier then the 5th on you son.

He/she will look at many aspects - what correction is needed. If there are fillings in any of these teeth, how long/curved are the roots, how many (upper 4s have two roots) etc.

If lets say your son's teeth are meeting perfectly at the back (the molar area) and correction is needed mainly at the front, by removing the 5th tooth you then have to move number 1, 2, 3 and 4towards the created gap. If you remove the 4th tooth instead, you only move the tooth number 1, 2 and 3.

It is a bit more complicated than this as usually with braces you get correction (even if tiny) on every single tooth because they work as a unit. I just wanted to give you an idea how the orthodontist have to think about closing the gaps by the remaining teeth.

If you have fixed braces, only very little, I had them with no problems, and I have a phobia of dentists.

The part that will probably hurt the most is having the metal rings placed around your back teeth, but this is only akin to a bad toothache, and will go by the end of the day, you feel a slight discomfort when they alter the tauntness of the wire, but again, by the time you get home, the discomfort will be gone.

If you are concerned, you could request an anaestic, but this won't do much, and having the rings fitted for example only takes about a minute, literally.

Also, ask your dentist if you can perhaps watch them fit it on someone else, or a pair of dentures, and you can see what it involves.

If you do feel uncomfortable after, take some painkillers and have a nap or something, when you wake up, you'll forget all about it.

If you need something to take your mind off things, take an MP3 player with you and listen to some music or something, or find a website with riddles on it, don't look at the answer, then think about how to solve the riddle, and have a look when you get home.

To be honest, it's not even as bad as say, having a filling, you barely feel anything.

I am very concerned about my gum lines receding. I am nineteen and have braces.My teeth look really great except if I pull my lip down and look at my gums on the front two bottom teeth. But I brush carefully, floss,etc. I have very good oral hygiene.

The recession is pretty bad. I have called a periodontists but hope i don't have to take it that far. I don't want to loose those teeth.

Those two teeth are sensitive to the touch/hot/cold more recently, where the gum is receding especially. I don't bite into anything even a little hard with those teeth, I can but I am afraid of making them worse.They aren't loose or anything. I keep them clean and brush lightly. Now I will try swishing with warm salt water as I saw someone else's question about the same thing and that was recommended.

1) Is there something that i can do to try to restore the gums without surgery?

2) Once the braces are off could they get better on there own?

Please give me any advice you have.

This is something that you should discuss with your Orthodontist. It may be that the teeth are being moved too quickly causing this recession.

Do not scrape your gum tissue or use a tooth pick. Continue to brush and floss as you have been and use warm salt water rinses.

Call your ortho or dentist for an exam and consult in regard to this problem. It may be that you have nothing to worry about and this just "looks" odd to you due to the movement. Ortho movement will make your teeth loose and feel more sensitive.

If you've not had any hygiene problems in the past, then it's unlikely this could be perio.

I hope I've been of some help and that you will discuss this with either your dentist or your orthodontist as soon as possible. Good luck with your ortho treatment and continue to keep them clean for the best end results of a beautiful smile!

Additional information: If you have excellent hygiene, have kept up with your normal cleaning appointments and do not have plaque build up on your gum tissue. Do not use a tooth pick to make your tissue bleed. You are in braces and need to have this checked by your ortho or dentist, I can not stress this enough. Do not damage your tissue any further by prodding under the tissue with objects, let your dentist decide what should be done for your best dental health. You can stimulate the gum tissue by rubbing it with a clean finger after flossing and brushing, not a finger nail, just the finger. Please see your dentist for an evaluation.
Reply:Two things. One. rinse your mouth out after eating anything and scrape your teeth with your finger nail. Two, vitamin C is essential to gum health. Take a lot of it. Eat limes raw, etc. And, oh yea, dig into your gums with a toothpick to let them bleed. once a day or every few days. This flushes out germs. When healthy, they wont bleed. (rinsing with clean cold water is the best. The best tooth brush to use is the one with the rows at opposit angles. Really scrapes plaque. Choose Medium. A medium brush will soon become a little softer and be ideal. Don't listen to the dentists who say only use a soft brush. They soon get too soft and don't do much. A hard brush is too abrasive to the gums.
Reply:Take a round toothpick and gently scrape below the gum line all the way around the tooth. It will begin to bleed but that's good. Cleaning under the gum line is normally over looked but it will eventually make your gums grow back over your teeth.
Reply:as your gums recede cementum(what covers the roots of teeth below the gums as opposed to enamal which what is on the crown of teeth) becomes exposed. Cementum is more sensitive than enamal. Some people say fluoride treatments such as varnishes help the sensitivity. As far as surgery, if the recession is great enough you might need a free gingival graft. Which is a minor surgery done under local anesthetic were they take a little skin from the roof of your mouth and graft it onto the graft site. The donor site will just feel like you have a pizza burn for a little while and will heal fast. People say this helps significantly with the sensitivity.
Reply:Hey Renee. Nothing else can be done once those teeth are adjusted---same thing is happening to me currently. Surgery is the only option, but they use the tissue from your roof of your mouth to do it. Use the plexabrush (called something like that) to floss with, but first dip it into listerine. Only use floss if the brush won't go through. This will kill all bacteria that is going into those sensitive areas---floss will cut the gums since they are so sensitive. Also use an electric toothbrush and go right along the gumline on the outside and inside of your teeth. Don't press with it too hard, but just enough so that the bristles begin to expand. This is what my periodontist just instructed me to do since the dentists, orthodontist, etc. didn't even tell me i have gingivitis and gum loss!!!!!! My teeth were killing me---but not for long! ;o)

Yes and even longer. Buy you some Oral-Gel (ok keep it hidden) listen to what he told you not to eat including ICE! Did you hear ICE? Take Asprins every 4 hours. Be behave it'll be worth it. You were beautiful before so think of what you'll be now. God Bless You and Our Southern People.

Reply:HA ya it is ..... be worried if they dont hurt.... before you go to the orthodontist take a couple of motrins or something, it helps alot,,,, and everytime you go and they tighten them or anything afterwards they WILL hurt,,,, sorry..., but its all worth it once you get them off.... ;D
Reply:yes its very normal.. when i got my braces my teeth hurt for about 2 weeks. the first week i could barely eat anything.. dont worry the pain wont last.. just be sure to take lots of aspirin.. and each month you get your braces "tightened" they wont hurt.. they might be a little sore but not sore to the point where you cant eat... good luck...
Reply:Yep, it's going to hurt. It can last up to a week. Try tylenol and baby orajel. The stuff makes it not hurt so bad.

Reply:It's normal for it to hurt, even after two days. Usually on the first night it doesn't hurt, but the pain starts on the second or third day. I also would advise Tylenol or Advil but only at nights!! This is what my ortho told me because that's when it becomes necessary since you can't sleep so try not to take it during the day. It will hurt up to a week and this is normal so you don't have to worry as the results are definitely worth the pain. To decrease the pain however, try not to eat hard foods as they will only irritate the gums more (e.g. carrots, only sliced apples, etc). Reply:Yes it will be sore for a little while and every time you get adjustments it might be sensitive for a few days after. Its only because your teeth are moving little by little. I'm not sure how your orthodontist practices but the doctor I work for uses different thicknesses of wire to shape your arch and a line your teeth. So every time our patients have an adjustment we put a thicker wire in so the tension is greater and so they do experience some soreness. Just take some Advil that's about all you can do.

You may be asked to keep your mouth closed during the treatments and a mouth guard may not be a bad idea. The room where laser treatments are performed are not allowed to have any reflective surfaces as a safety precaution.

Any change like that, you're going to be self-conscious about it. But, it will get better. You will get used to them. I think the biggest thing is you're wondering what others will say. You've made a change in your appearance and you're kinda sad about it. But, after you see your friends, family, and others see you've got braces and it's no big deal for them, everything will go back to normal. Try not to obsess about it. You've got them on, you'll wear them for a while, and then you'll have great teeth. And think of it this way, in the grand scheme of things, what's 2 years of your life with braces? You live to be 80, that's only 1/40th of your life. And it may not be the best way to think of things, but if having braces is the worst crises you face in life, consider yourself lucky. There are others who might like braces to help their teeth.

I have never bothered before but wonder whether it's too late to get braces fitted by NHS, I am 40 and one tooth kind of crosses over another, not much but if it wasn't like that my teeth would be perfect. How long do you wear braces for and is it too late at my age. Thanks

The NHS will not fund orthodontic treatment over the age of 19 and most children are referred at the age of 7-8 for initial consultation whilst the development of permanent teeth can be evaluated easily. The NHS are even beginning to cut back (probably for financial reasons) on referral for orthodontic treatment for children and will now only refer in moderate to severe cases and for the reason that straight teeth enables proper cleaning and is therefore a good preventative measure to prevent dental treatment as a result of decay. The NHS doesn't allocate their scarce resources so that children can have perfect looking teeth.

Without examination of your teeth it seems difficult to assess whether you should consider private treatment but it seems to be asthetic rather than causing you a particular dental problem. However, if you do choose to take this option be prepared to pay about £3000.

Depending on the treatment needed braces can be worn for varying amounts of time and cost varying amounts. It sounds like your problem could probably be corrected wihtin a period of 6-12 months with a removable brace and this may cost only around £1800. If these two teeth are the only problem I do not expect that orthodontic treatment would be recommended even if undertaken privately. Teeth however can move at any age so a 40 year old in need of treatment would be able to seek treatment privately.

You have to wear braces for up to 2 years, and then probably a retainer for more time. If your musculature is quite strong, and would push the teeth back into the previous position (a possibility I had) you might have to have a permanent retainer fitted to the rear of the teeth. They're a real pain - both to keep teeth clean, and in the pressure that gets put onto your gum line to move the teeth.

It may be that your teeth could have a veneer fitted that would hide the issue.
Reply:I did Invisaligns at 36. People can't tell when you are wearing them and you can take them out when necessary. I'm glad I did it. $3,000 -- Health insurance did not cover it.

Reply:It is probably too late unfortunatly. Your problem is mainly cosmetic and at the moment the NHS won't even pay for children to have braces unless they have really severe overcrowding of the teeth, cut backs and all that, I was a dental nurse for a number of years and the new contracts for dentists are awful. If it's really a big problem for you, you could discuss various other different treatment options with your dentist. It would probably be a private treatment though due to the fact that its cosmetic. Veneers are sometimes an option, but you must remeber that even they destroy some of the surface layer of your tooth and still need replacing after a while so it could be costly too.
Reply:On the nhs yes, as your over 18 years of age and because the reason you want them is for cosmetic reasons.

you can ask your dentist to refer you to an orthodontist but believe me they will charge you on a private basis and it can work out very costly.

In some cases even children's parents have been told that they will have to pay as the child's teeth do not warrant braces and it's purely cosmetic.

I don't think there are partials. I had braces and my back teeth were fine, I only needed my front teeth to be straight. I got regular braces

But why would you want only just some teeth? I see no cosmetic advantage since your smile only shows the first 6-8 teeth.

Reply:I had braces for 3 years and if you brush every day, you'll be just fine. I was actually in a serious accident and my braces wound up holding my teeth in!!!!! So they won't make your teeth fall out. I hated them until that day when they saved my pearly whites!!!!

It's called an exposure. Sometimes your canine tooth doesn't come down like it should and it needs a little help. They get you nice and numb and take out the baby tooth. After the baby tooth is out, the remove some of the tissue and "expose" the canine tooth. Once the tooth is exposed they bond a metal chain to the tooth and connect the other end of the chain to your braces. This helps the tooth come down.

DO NOT WHITEN YOUR TEETH WITH BRACES ON THEM!!!! If you whiten your teeth with braces on, there is a chance that you will whiten only the enamel on your teeth that is not covered by the braces. The part of the tooth that is covered by the braces WILL NOT WHITEN, and when you have your braces removed, you will have little "yellow" squares on your teeth, where your braces were.

You may think, no problem, I will just whiten them again when I get my braces off. Not so fast, big problem. If you try to whiten the little yellow squares off your teeth, the surrounding enamel will just get whiter, along with the squares, and your teeth will not match for a very long time. AND, when you get your braces off, do not over whiten! If you do, your teeth will become "opaque" and appear darker (greyish) because the inside of your mouth is dark. Just follow instructions on any whitiening product closely.

Reply:Well brush with whitening toothpaste in the morning and at night, is all i can recommened as of right now. I am a dental assistant and I know for a fact it is impossible to bleach while you have braces. For now use a whitening paste, and when they are removed go for crest white strips. They work great, i have got in office bleaching and used crest strips. The strips work just as well and you will save about 300$.
